Kinetic energy is a worthless metric for terminal performance in tissue and folks who parrot that garbage don’t deserve to be courted around when it’s 2024 and any effort on your part could have prevented you from perpetuating it further.

If you don't know what it means, don't post about it...

That "worthless" metric tells you how well the bullets velocity is maintained during flight to do the damage it needs to when it matters.

A simple PHYS 101 Introduction to Physics course will teach you that. Hell, you can even drop out once you finish Newtonian Mechanics if you wanted...

Kinetic energy only tells you the maximum potential of the bullet. It doesn’t take into account bullet construction which when paired with impact velocity determines terminal damage. I also think it’s a worthless metric for terminal performance, all it does is give us a number to compare potential of a loading. The only metric I’m interested in is impact velocity as that determines how the bullet performs. As long as my impact velocity is enough for the bullet to perform I could care less what the kinetic energy is as it really doesn’t tell us much. Often times a bullet is exiting and take a lot of that kinetic energy into the dirt behind the animal.

You have absolutely no idea what kinetic energy is because what you described is called ballistic coefficient.

Kinetic energy is not a wounding mechanism, nor is even ballistic coefficient.

On the post asking about the 270 Win being marginally effective on Elk. Like any cartridge, one has to know its limitations. The 270 Win is VERY effective on Elk, with the right bullet, even at half-way reasonable ranges. Same goes for all the other BG cartridges that meet...say a minimum on Ethics.

Happy New Year ya'll.
I asked you about your reasoning for using a .270 Win for elk. There are some whose "ethics" say nothing smaller than 30 cal or a magnum for elk.

But you have used a .270 and found it to be very effective. Others on here have found that similar bullets with only .034" or .054" smaller diameter create damage very similar to your .270 on big game.

I would argue that it's ethical to use any legal caliber to take big game. The "ethics" involved should focus on people taking shots they know they can make because they've practiced at that range and staying within their chosen bullets effective velocity window.

Yes, we’re murdering it to eat it. But I doubt that you fully mean you owe it nothing. Maybe a quick death without prolonged suffering in exchange for all those tasty steaks and burgers? Isn’t that the goal we all aspire to? And I’m guessing you do too. Just sayin……
