New swarovski El vs old.

I run 8x32elsv for my hand held work and 12s for on a tripod. I left the 12s home on one of my trips, and just used the spotter.

No complaints, the 8s got me bulls spotted to 2 miles plus.

I have an 8x32 EL (not SV). It is a fantastic general purpose binocular. It is tack sharp nearly to the edge with fantastic deep depth of field and nearly perfect ergos.

Is the light gathering with the 42's not a big enough benefit over the 32's?
Yeah, your still before shooting time with the 8x32 els, you get 423' fov with the new ones verses like 399 with the 42s. That plus 8 ounces less, and the ergonomics are sweet on the 8x32s.

Have both the SLC's and the EL's. Both in 10X42. (My son "borrowed the SLC's)
If I were to have to buy again for a hunting binocular it would be the SLC's.
And for me the 10X42. If I were only bow hunting it would be the 8X32.

I've got a pair of the 10x42 EL Swarovision HD binos and love them for sheep hunting and long range glassing for grizzlies, edge of field whitetails, back country mulies etc. My wife put the grabs on our old pair of 2003 10x42 EL binos that were pre-HD and Swarovision. If anyone wants a side by side photo of the two PM your email address and I'll send you the photos. The new SV are a few ounces heavier than the old ELs and definitely are sharper. The edge resolution is quite a bit better too, and they have even more eye relief with the cups screwed in......more than I need as an eye glass wearer and I turn them up one notch. That said, the old binos are very eye friendly and fine glass. The SV lens took me a bit of time to get used to when I bought them, almost like changing your eye glass prescription. Once I'd used them a while, I don't want to go back to the old ELs.

I also have a pair of Leica Ultravid 8x32 (pre-HD) from 2005. I love them for treestand hunting, elk hunting, general hiking, etc. I won't carry them sheep hunting even though they save 3/4 of a pound over the 10-42 SV. I think binos are like packs or boots, if you can afford it get a lighter pair for the shorter range work (8x32 IMO) and a larger/heavier pair with higher magnification for the open country (10x42 IMO).

And of course a set of 12x or 15x for the desert or wide open reaches is the 3rd pair of binos that have their place. Mine are Leica 15x56HD Geovids and they are excellent optically but mostly on loan to my brother who does a lot of long range rifle shooting....I typically bowhunt so don't have near as much need for them as he does. I used them in AZ Coues deer hunting a year ago and enjoyed finding deer a mile a way, but prefer the 10x with a 20-60X spotter for backpack sheep hunts....again IMO.

I own the older EL's in 10x42, and my buddy has the new EL's in 10x42. The newer versions are sharper, and a slight bit clearer on edge to edge resolution. The Flatline lenses in the new versions make panning almost impossible for me. I feel like I am getting sea sick because of the field flattener lenses. MY buddy says it bothered him at first, but he is now used to it and it has no effect on him. Optically I think the new ones are superior, but If I had to go out and buy a new pair of swaro's today, I would go with the SLC HD over the EL's. I think the SLC HD's are optically between the older EL's and the new EL's, but they do not have the field flattener lenses in them. Bottom line, whichever you choose, you will be getting a superior optic.

I went from Diamondbacks to SLC's.....jeez didn't know what I was missing. Well deer is what I was missing, lol.

Don't know yet, they don't get here til Friday. The suspense is awful though :)

You should have your new SLC's by now so what do you think ? I love my new EL's but I already own a Swarovski spotter and a couple of rifle scopes and have used other people's EL's so I knew what I was getting.
