I was just browsing the sitka website and saw that there are tarps listed in 10x12 and 8x10. They can't be ordered yet but I thought I'd spread the word out and see if anyone else knows anything about em.

I noticed he didn't say anything about it being water proof, he just said snow and wind proof.

I have been very pleased with my 10x10 Seek Outside DST so far as a basic tarp. Another Rokslide member borrowed it and is headed to AK right now. For a shaped tarp the Kifaru Paratarp or Megatarp have kept me dry also a lot of nights.

For a primary shelter I usually take the Megatarp. For a emergency shelter I don't plan to glass under I take the Paratarp. For maximum versatility I like the DST. It doesn't seal down for really big wind as easily as the other two, but it can do a lot of different set-ups and works great the majority of the time. With a tree the diamond pitch is very fast and works great. All are great quality and the DST is $129. The DST can be set up decent for big winds, I just have not done it yet. I've had the others longer and if I'm expecting big wind I take what I'm used to.

I personally will always run either a square tarp or a shaped tarp like the Kifaru. I have a couple rectangular tarps and like the Kifaru's or DST better. The rectangular tarps work great as an A frame but aren't as easy to pitch in a hurry for me in other configurations. Sometimes when I decide I need to pitch a tarp it's dark or I waited to long trying to outrun weather, I want to be able to get the tarp up fast and simple as possible.

I'm sure the Sitka tarps are quality, but with me not loving rectangular tarps and the results I've had with the others I don't see myself owning one.

I should have watched Ryan's video before commenting, it's not a straight rectangular tarp. Maybe it won't have some of the issues I have found in the past with those. Guess by the time the tarps I already have wear out you guys will have that figured out for me!

I have one and like it. It's super lightweight and packs down very small. Comes with cordage already attached in 6 spots, with more tieout points if needed.

I don't know how many people will actually spend the money for it, but it's a pretty slick little tarp. Looking forward to it NOT taking up a lot of room in my pack. I'll be using it mainly for glassing in Alaska, but will probably end up using it for my sleeping shelter in a bit warmer/nicer weather.

So how did the tarp workout for you? Would you recommend this to others after your first hand experience?

I like sitka. Self proclaimed borderline fanboy for subalpine. I get it that printing their fabric is going to be expensive, but I just can’t follow them on this one.

Those price pints put them in league with several dyneema options that are half the weight. If you wanted silnylon in camo, you could get MultiCam or kryptek for the same weight and half the cost.

Me too. A complete Tarptent with nest cost about this much. They overshot the mark on this price point. Should add wings like the Mega Ogee tarp to it can have closed doors for use as an overnight shelter. Not buying it.

I have the 8x10, quiality and design wise it compares well to my SO and Kifaru tarps

I think I'm going to order one of these for my rifle hunt. I can use it for glassing during the day and then pitch it for a vestibule at night. It certainly weighs alot less than a typical vestibule on a 4 season tent so their is weight savings there for sure.

What camo did you get? I'm up in the air on this one. I'm thinking about going with the bigger one in OC and the smaller one in sub alpine for bow season. How does it blend in with your surroundings?

Can you provide me with a link or something? I have been searching and not findings options that are better than the Sitka.

I got it in subalpine. It looks really good actually. I used it as single person shelter and also front porch on a sawtooth. So far so good.
