Prince of Whales island is now limited to one deer annually unless you are a resident of POW and on subsistence. I do not remember the dates but there are limited hunting dates as well. Make sure to check before you go.

Can you post a link to the change in regulations?
WP26-03: Close all of Unit 2 from Jul. 24 – Aug. 15 to non-federally qualified users (NFQUs) and reduce the harvest limit for NFQUs to 1 buc.k PASS
WP26-04: Close all of Unit 2 from Jul. 24 – Jul. 31 and from Jan. 1 – 31 to deer hunting by federally qualified subsistence users (FQSUs) from Units 1C, 1D, 4, 5, and Ketchikan and limit harvest by these FQSUs to two bucks; and to close all of Unit 2 from Jan. 1 – 31 to deer hunting by FQSUs from Units 3, 1B, and the remainder of Unit 1A (including Metlakatla and Saxman) and limit harvest by these FQSUs to four bucks. What is a "federally qualified user"? And what is a "federally qualified subsistence user"?

As I understand it you must be a federally qualified subsistence individual. Residents of POW by definition regardless of income qualify automatically for subsistence. The subsistence part originally ment you were lower income and needed the extra limits to provide for the family and that is no longer the case.

POW residents and the board made it so even if you are an Alaskan on subsistence you still can not hunt POW beyond the limits set for non subsistence of 1 buck.

Is all of pow federal land? Th fsb rules do not necessarily apply to state land.

It applies to all federal land in unit 2 as far as I know. There is very little state land on pow. I checked the map as soon as the regulations came out. You can bet the little area outside of klawock will be swarming with hunters.

this is what happens when lands are left in the federal governments hands. Some people seem all butt hurt that other parts of the state are being conveyed to the state from federal hands. I am fairly certain there are more federal lands in alaska shut down to your average person compared to state land. Doesnt matter if you have a bazillian acres of public BLM land if they shut it down to 99% of hunters, at that point it might as well be private hunting club that you can go hike around in for funsies.

It is strange a guy like me can build a waterfront home there with no mortgage and a fat pension and qualify.

Still lame that that Alaska is the only place the Federal Government messes with the State’s right to manage hunting!

Just more government bureaucracy that serves special interests.

Become a resident, spend a winter with us, and qualify for subsistence.
Oh heck no 🥶 you can be gone 6 months and still qualify for the perm fund. You can be gone longer and maintain residency as long as you “intend to return.”
