Thinking about buying a new Winchester Model 70 Super Grade Stainless wood stock, probably in .270. Just wondering what the quality of these rifles are? I know the newer model 70’s are much nicer then the old Post 64’s had been. Can I expect under 1 MOA accuracy?

I believe the new rifles are made by FN. this is a good thing.

I am pretty sure most new rifles are sub MOA these days. But I am impressed with the M70. I thought I read they have a push/control style feed.

The current model 70s are controlled round feed. The XPR is push feed
This is correct.

However, both the Model 70 and XPR use the exact same barrels and triggers. They are both accurate AF, as well.

I have used far fewer rifles than a lot of folks on here so take my opinion for what it’s worth. I bought a new .270 M70 Featherlight to be my one rifle and I’m happy with that choice. I figured if the gun was good enough for Jack O’Conner it’ll be good enough for me. Quality is good, it’s balanced/handles well, it shoots more accurately than I can, and it’s got a walnut stock. Personally I don’t like plastic, it has no “soul”. Those super grade stainless are sharp looking.

Yes it’s a decent bet it will shoot. Only comment is that I haven’t had as much fondness for the new enclosed trigger system being used now (MOA trigger) as some people have. If yours isn’t adjustable to your liking a spring replacement might help. If that doesn’t do it then a quick swap out to a Timney is easy.

I dont have a supergrade but I have 2 m70 extremem weather rifles. Both of them shoot really well, I'm not a precision shooter by any stretch and I can shoot sub 1" groups with both of them. My 30-06 shoots several loads really well. Great rifles.

I like em! I have a Featherweight in 7x57, Ultimate Shadow SS with a B&C EW take-off in 30-06, Westerner in 7mm Rem Mag. All current production rifles and shoot great.

Model 70 Featherweight in 300 WSM here and she's a shooter, 1/2" groups. Extremely accurate.

I have the same rifle and it is my first M70. With 150's to 180's it is more accurate than I am.

How’s the recoil on that?

150's aren't bad. 180's have some thump. You can tell the difference.

From a field position the recoil isn't bad with either.

From the bench 180's are not friendly.

Mine was zeroed for 180's. It shot them very well.

I am now hand loading 150's at 3,000fps and they are at or less than 1" at 200 if I do my part. That is still more than I need for anything within the range I am shooting at it.

The above is my opinion only, your mileage may vary.

Thanks I was curious because I want to get a M70 in 300wsm, but am still trying to figure out to go with the Featherweight and go heavier to the Super Grade to better handle some of that recoil, especially for those 180gr-200gr.

I have 2 M70 Featherweights, in 7-08 and 257 Roberts, made by FN in S. Carolina in 2012. I think a Featherweight is about the prettiest production rifle made. Both of mine shoot right at 1" consistently. 3/4" on a good day.

I’d choose the one that appeals to your aesthetic preferences. The barreled actions are the same weight. The WSM and magnum FWTs have sporter weight barrels. Any extra weight will be in the stock.

The difference in recoil will be negligible. I prefer the FWT stock because it lacks a cheek piece, which I prefer.
