After 5 years of applying to this area, we are finally successful. 3 tags for the first Elk rifle hunt. We have gone out and scouted a bit. Church Mountain near Nogal/Carrizozo is very intriguing to us. The mountain is in the wilderness. Does anyone know the shortest route of travel first by road then by trail to the mountain? Is this a good area?

Church Mtn is surrounded by private on 3 sides. The only way to access it that makes sense is via Pennsylvania canyon....and that will be straight up and down....better option is Little Argentine....better access, more available country to cover.

Yes, that is Argentina Peak. Access is good from the end of the road past Bonita Lake. I’m not sure about the elk movement but it is a good sized area of wilderness to move through.

This a scouting pic of the bull I ended up taking. Not a giant by any stretch, but I was happy.

Jimmy, I drew this tag for the late season rifle this year and was looking at the same areas. Was wondering if you were happy with those areas?

I spent some time out there last year and I'm headed back for mulies this year.

I'd love to hunt Church but I personally wouldn't attempt it without horses.
