New Guy here. Considering straightwall wildcat.

It can also be odd with what they consider “shoulder” at the taper to neck junction.

I was going to mess around with a 44-40 and some places seemed to indicate it was considered not straight wall.

Then others like a 32-40 are considered straight wall.

In the end I went with something that was clearly allowed and met the max length of all straight wall states. I chose 45 Raptor which is way overkill, but was a fun project.

I would not consider that chart accurate. A few of those look over the max case length. Others are below the 35 caliber minimum.

Would a handloaded 9.3x72R work? Would it have enough case capacity? Looks like it has a .366 bullet and a case length of 2.83 inches.

The basic 9.3x72R has a .364 193-grain bullet that isn’t super impressive. But I fully expect that it could be loaded up a lot in a more modern action with good steel. And having one built in .366 bore would provide far better bullet options.

With the right bullet and powder, yes. Again, in a modern action that can take loading it to modern pressure.
It looks like you have a couple options in .366 from Nosler with a BC over .4 at 250gr. The Accubond, and BT would both work. The Barnes 250TTSX would also get you there. In a 20+ inch barrel with LT-30 for a powder, gets you 1800fps at 400y.

If recoil is a concern, I’m not sure you’re getting much beyond 250 yards without increasing your felt recoil.

I love the 444 Marlin in Ohio. I’m getting 2325 fps with a 265 grain bullet out of a 22” barrel. It’s an 8.5 lb rifle. I don’t love the recoil, but it’s not a problem hunting. I have reduced hand loads for practice.

It is a hammer. Haven’t tried it beyond 200 yards but I think it would get it done just fine.

To get to 400 yards and still have the velocity for bullet upset you're going to need a BC probably above .25, .3+ would be better. There are no bullets in .400 that I know of that have that.

I haven't shot the 250 or 275 version of this bullet but when I shot the 225 grain version I ended up with a BC in the .275 to .28 range. The 275 grain should easily make .34 to .35 G1 BC. He advertises .36 but I think .34 is a more reasonable figure.

I wouldn't trust a Barnes TTSX of any size to expand, at all, at 1800'. I know a lot of people love them but there's too many stories out there of them penciling.

What twist rate would you need?

Should get you to at least 300ish without crazy recoil. You might also look at using the hv bullet for your wildcat round.

I agree on that. Monos really should be over 2000, but people claim 1800. For his purposes the 2 nosler bullets are much more ideal unless he doesn't like hunting with lead.
It looks like hawk has a 225 and a 250gr 9.3mm that would get him out to 400 as well.

What twist rate would you need?
The Barnes will need the fastest twist, because it's the longest. On a standard day(0ft, 59F), it looks like 1 in 16 would be the slowest twist you could go with.
The Nosler BT would need the least twist, a 1:18.5 is stable.
