This new Durston X-dome 1+ has my interest for using on my Alaska backpack hunts. I'm usually hunting goats and bears for my alpine hunts. I've been using hilleberg red label tents the last bunch of years. They are fantastic and are bombproof for the insane weather we can get. But they are a little heavy, so I'm always looking to cut weight from my pack if possible. Do y'all think trying this tent next fall is a good idea or a recipe to get a blown up tent? Spending a freezing cold wet night surviving before I can hike out or have the plane pick me up. I have no experience with any Durston tent, but they seem to have a great reputation.

No, it’s a great idea. I’ve used the X-Mid 1p solid on several sheep hunts, as well as a Duomid & Niak for most of the others.

I plan on buying the X-Dome 1+ w/ solid inner liner when it’s released early next year and most likely use it for the upcoming season.

Nice! Yeah ive been itching to do the preorder that gets shipped in April. They seem so popular with the regular backpacking community, i dont want them to sell out on my ass again. It will be nice if this tent rocks especially since it is way cheaper than buying another hilleberg like ive been planning to

I've got a solid xmid2, and it is awesome, however I don't love that it's hard to get a good tight pitch on super rocky areas or unlevel ground. I also just recently bought the carbon poles so I can quit leaving my trekking poles behind if I leave my tent up all day.

The quality is very high and I expect to get many years out of it.

I would absolutely buy that xdome if I were in the market for a tent, and likely will sometime in the future.

Exactly the reason I only used my X Mid for a couple hunts. A Single pole Duomid is a lot easier to pitch in uneven terrain.

I have a KUIU Stormstar, survived many horrible nights in that beauty- was going to get a Hilleberg then heard about this X-Dome. Not sure what to do now but think I might just hold off till its got some field use.

Weather like that on a sheep hunt. I hope you got home, bought a lotto ticket and applied for some of the lowest draw odd hunt tags for the next year

I recently saw a YouTube video where some thru-hiking influencer was testing the X-Dome and ripped one of the tie-outs off the tent in fairly common (in my limited experience) sheep hunting winds. I believe it was a pre-production model fwiw.

It’s pretty light. I feel like it has tons of room for sleeping and gear. I’m in AK and will be using it on early season hikes to see how it will ride.

Good to hear all of your opinions! I couldn’t help myself and pulled the trigger on the April preorder. So I’ll be doing the same as @MountainTracker. Im definitely interested to see how much rigidity adding the trekking poles will add. I always hike with them in the mountains so its no weight added in my opinion

Went down the rabbit hole, reading and watching quite a bit. Durston admits as is, it’s a 3+ season tent. I personally would be a little concerned taking it to Alaska with serious weather. Many of the reviewers even mentioned that as amazing as it is, they would be skeptical about it in severe weather. I’m sure the ArcDome by tarptent would fair better, BUT it also has some significant downsides. Again, I’m not sure it would survive past 40mph.

IF tarptent comes out with a 1 person version (meaning narrowing it up and having less paneling to catch the wind), I think that would be an amazing shelter. Until then, I’m not ready to risk my life with either of these shelters.

Got an email from Durston today saying they would be sending me a new pole set, after Durston and Easton identified where the aluminum inserts on some poles were not glued correctly. According to the email the issue only affected a small percentage of pole sets, but they wanted to be sure so they are sending new sets to everyone.

I thought this was a good move by Durston and Easton to address the issue immediately and provide replacement at no cost. Those are the types of companies I like to give my business to.

Henry Shires wrote to me this morning and said to check back in a few months for a 1p ArcDome Ultra, in response to enquiring about such a tent.

I used my X-Dome in MT and had a carbon pole failure last week. Hard to explain but heard a crack when inside making coffee. Found where carbon split where the ferrule goes into the pole on the lowest section. Heard a second crack later but never found observed damage. Customer service was great. New one is on the way. Wasn’t any big snow or wind loads and was just sitting free before I staked it out so confidence is a little shaken on a serious trip I couldn’t walk out of in a day. I’ll keep using it but will probably be for summer through September trips without wind forecasted. Late September on I’ll probably use my KUIU Mountain Star until I need to swap to a hot tipi or Hilleberg Soulo or Kaitum. Loved the layout and size, vented great. Like the ability to add trekking poles for support.

I always forget to take photos on my trips so these are the few that show the tent. And a sunrise in the fog.
