New arrows punching through target... suggestions?

I just got some new arrows (Bloodsport HT1's) along with some new broadheads to try (Trophy Taker Shuttle T's and Slick Trick Magnums).

My current target is a large Morrell Yellow Jacket block-style broadhead target.

My old arrows (Victory VForce with Muzzy broadheads) would only go about 1/2 way up the shaft before stopping, which was fine.

Now, I knew that the smaller-diameter HT1's were supposed to be a bit better for penetration, but I did not expect these to bury up to the fletching and poke out the other side! That's a huge performance difference between these arrows. And, the Morrell target is not worn out. I get the same shoot-through penetration no matter where it hits and on any side.

Interestingly, just a quick observation, the Shuttle T's consistently penetrate about 6 inches farther than the Slick Trick Magnums, a noticeable difference in the foam target... wonder if that has the same implications for game? But, the Slick Tricks are also 4-blade heads vs. the 3-blade Shuttle T's, so perhaps that extra cutting blade adds a little more resistance to slow down penetration while doing more cutting damage (not necessarily a bad thing for hunting).

Anyway, although the Morrell Yellow Jacket is large and deep, I guess I'm in the market for a new block-style target that is capable of stopping these new small-diameter HT1's.

Does anyone have any experience/recommendations for a target that's known to work well with small-diameter arrows, used with good-penetrating broadheads?

Go get yourself a reinhart block or 18-1. Best target imo for both broadheads and fp's.

With the 18-1 if you shoot it out in a year you get another one for free. I took that as a challenge, and I still have the same 18-1.... Tough target, I think that mine is missing about half the foam by now and its still stopping my injexions

Agree, 18-1. I'm hard on BH targets and quickly shoot them out. I even got me a free 18-1 within the year as I shot that out, but they fought me even though it was in about 6 pieces and I emailed them pics. LAS took care of that, great CS. The VAP style of shafts penetrate significantly more in foam targets. That doesn't really transfer over to live game, but many think it does.

My vote is just practice from really far away...

Thanks, this is working perfectly. I stepped back so my 5-pin sight is now set up for 220, 230, 240, 250, and 260 yards. Over-penetration on target is no longer an issue!

Seriously though, my local store carries some cheap targets along with the BLOCK targets. Anyone have experience with BLOCK targets using small-diameter arrows? Should I go ahead and get one of these BLOCKS, or order another brand online (such as a Rinehart) and wait for it to arrive?

block will last about a season with BH if you shoot them a lot. I love the rineharts when it comes to stopping BH.... Or a sand pit.

as far as penetration... while i dont feel that foam is a good medium to compare penetration... the short, steep angled, 4 bladed slick trick will NOT penetrate as much as a thinner, "sleeker," 3 bladed shuttle t. It is physics, but in my opinion, if you penetrate both sides, why cares if it goes 2 inches vs 3 inches into the tree stump behind him? I'd rather have a 4 blade wound any day of the week.

If you want to shoot the heck out of a target with broad heads, the reinhart is the answer. As said above, a block won't hold up very long. The 18-1 is great. I have to admit that it's a little unnerving for me to shoot at 50-60 yards on it though. It is not a big target.

Had a block and wasn't impressed shot out just as quick as the cheaper layered foam targets available around here except the block was $160!!

Ok I will be serious. Rhinehart makes great targets. I shot an 18-1 in my basement at 12 yards this winter and it has held up great. Still stopping broadheads during practice now.
