New Argali 3P Tent? Help Me Design it.

Another fortunate tester here. I received my Lemhi last night and was able to get it pitched this evening alongside my Absaroka.

Specs:
  • Weight: 2 lbs 1 oz in the stuff sack with 10 Argali Piton stakes
  • Size: 9’2” wide x 8’7” long - I measured from the corner line locks, so the official measurements could be different.
  • Pitches with two 55" poles
  • Mine is the double-door version with no stove jack

Setup & Pitching
My first impression is how fast and easy the Lemhi pitches. I’ll echo what others have said, you can have it up in under 2 minutes solo. Stake out the 4 corners, insert the two poles, then stake the rest. There are 10 guy-out points around the base, with additional loops on the walls if you need more support.

Interior Space
Three people should be able to sleep comfortably. The offset zippers allow the guys on the ends to exit without climbing over the middle guy. I’ve got 25" pads on the outside and a 20" pad in the middle, which works well. For two hunters, it’s ideal whether you want extra gear space or plan to run a stove.

That’s a Seek Outside SXL stove in the pictures, and you can see how much room is still left around it. There’s even enough headroom to put a backpacking chair in the center and sit comfortably.

A Couple Notes:
  • When packed, it's slightly larger than a 48oz nalgene bottle.
  • The Lemhi is virtually the same footprint as the 4-person Absaroka.
  • The Lemhi uses a waterproof zipper instead of a flap like on the Absaroka.
  • If you plan on using trekking poles, make sure they extend to at least 55" (140cm). On level ground it uses every bit of that. My Black Diamond poles max at 55", so on uneven ground I may need to shim under them with rocks to get proper height.
The majority of my testing is going to be on weekend mule deer hunts and a 9 day early September elk hunt in northern AZ.

If anyone has questions, please ask.

This is exactly what I was looking for, especially comparison to the Absaroka, which I currently have.

What are your thoughts between the 2 and would they have different enough uses? With the footprints almost identical then interest shifts to interior and functionalities. The Lemhi seems like it would be a great 2 man option with the ability to have the stove in the middle vs one side on the Absaroka, giving guys their own space.

@Gmr777,

I still need to get the Lemhi in the field, but my initial comparison is:

The Lemhi excels when you are limiting yourself to 3 guys or 2 with a stove. It's faster to pitch and saves you a half pound compared to the Absaroka. The small tradeoff is you're limited to the direction you pitch the tent. So if somone's on an angle or in a hole or something, you'd have to try to orient the entire tent to give everyone a comfortable spot.

The Absaroka gives you a little more flexiblity with 3 or 4 people. The single pole in the middle allows you to orient yourself in the tent how you need, rather than having to orient the tent a specific way. I've also slept in the Absaroka with a guy on each side of the stove. This way, we each have our own door and the stove is between us. We just had to shuffle gear over our sleeping bags and had to be a little cautious when opening the door to not let snow or water fall on our sleeping bags.

If I was looking for a new tent and committed to 2 people with a stove, the Lemhi would be my top choice. I like the roominess for 2 people and the weight savings. The Lemhi also seems to solve the issues I had with my Seek Outside Guardian (I like silpoly over silnylon, more head room, stove in the middle, and much easier to pitch).

As long as my Absaroka is in my posession, I don't think I'd add the Lemhi. They're very close tents for two guys which is how we usually hunt. If/when it's time to replace my Absaroka, it would be a very tough choice on which one to go with.
