Ya it definitely sucks they are so limiting on when a guy can go walk around looking for something as natural as sheds but I understand why. The few, dictate the many. Not one to sell horns. Call me greedy but I enjoy my private collection :)

According to a recent email from the NDOW law enforcement that was posted on another site, the law is not in place at this time. You are still free to pick up sheds year round. Here is a copy of the email the individual received:

I believe I remember you from your time at the State Park at Eagle Valley. Anyway, there is no current season or restrictions that are different from years past. The Commission is hearing the issue and is trying to come to some sort of decision on the issue. There are too many different variables on the table to consider to make a guess on what will and will not be required at some time in the future as far as seasons, license requirements, etc. Keep checking our website to keep tabs on the issue as I'm sure it will be big news should something be decided. In any event, should a decision be made, it is doubtful it would be initiated anytime before this "shed-hunting" season. Hope that answers your question. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any further questions or clarifications.

Thank you,

Mike McCusker
Game Warden Lieutenant

Take this for what it is worth. From my understanding, the NDOW was told by the legislature, I believe, to draft regulations for shed hunting, but it sounds like they have not gotten that far yet.

Shed hunting has become very popular lately. The states need to enforce the wildlife harassment laws instead of creating new laws on shed hunting that can hardly be enforced. WY has had a law in place for years now and we repeatedly cross boot tracks and four wheeler tracks on opening day. If the wildlife harassment laws were properly enforced, we would have no need for shed hunting laws. But the same problem exists enforcing the harassment laws, too few wardens and too much country to cover.

Thanks Straight6! I was having troubles finding a reputable site that stated the law was in effect. Most searches just led to articles from local news in the state. I am curious on the dropping of sheds around that late January thru mid February. Are elk/deer dropping or am I to early for the area? I'm just a guy out on his two feet with my pack. Definitely not pushing game around or anything like that. Just trying to get the facts before diving in and hiking off. Appreciate all the responses and info so far guys!

The sources printing the information on the law are media sources right now. Believe me, if the law were in effect, the NDOW would have it shown loud and clear on their website. This is not a small problem, when the regulations go into effect, they wont be tucked away where you have to dig them out.

Late January/early February you will find a few that have shed. The deer that I watch in Wyoming, Northern Utah, and Southern Idaho generally shed from the 1st or 2nd week of February on through March. A couple of bucks I have been watching the past 4 years in Wyoming shed right around the 31st of January each year. Depends on the herd too. Seems like the deer farther south hold their antlers a little longer sometimes. Elk shed from late February through April so you will be a bit early for brown sheds. There are always white sheds from years past around that get missed, head out and put some miles on and you may turn something up. The NDOW actually has some decent info on areas that hold the majority of the populations in each unit group, may want to look it over. Send me a PM and I may be able to share a couple ideas of places to try.

Last I knew it was illegal to gather sheds from Jan 1st to April 15th in NV.

Last year it was brought up at CCWAB. The discussion was brought on by use of ultralights and atvs corralling deer into areas with guide lines to knock off antlers, I do not recall if this was witnessed or fabricated. The meeting in Vegas used Utah as an example of seasons dates as well as your online class .
