Nebraska hunters beware

The unicameral is two votes away from passing a bill that would grant landowners a 3 day rifle season prior to the regular rifle season to hunt deer. The original intention of this bill was to grant landowners an early season for deer IF THEY OPENED HALF THEIR LAND TO HUNTING DURING THE REGULAR SEASON.

With Nebraska having limited public lands this would be a worth while idea, however an amendment was approved removing the requirement to open a portion of property to HUNTING, so now it is just a bill to grant landowners an early rifle season. This will cost our game and parks money, and will harm hunting for the general public in my opinion. I own land in Nebraska and would qualify but I am still opposed to this.

The article doesn’t mention the potential lost revenue, but I suppose that’s possible if you assume the farmers will only hunt during the “free” period. An extra 3 days doesn’t seem like a big deal to me, but the rifle options there seem pretty limited already in comparison to southern states. I don’t have land there but do hunt there every year on a buddy’s farm. I shared with him and he’s opposed, and may have some political input.

The rationale is the farmers need rewarded for crop damages caused by deer, yet the proposed public access has been removed? In a sense that contradicts itself. If there were added public access, wouldn’t that allow for greater opportunities for deer harvest, thus providing more damage control?

Truly, I don’t like it at all. I feel like deer management would plunder if public access were granted, which I know has been removed. Sounds like some cry baby farmers are looking for an excuse to have an early start, not manage the deer herds for damage control purposes.

Am I missing anything else?

What would some potential pros be?

Nebraska archery season already opens earlier than neighboring states. I don’t buy the argument of ruining archery hunts. That’s as an archery hunter myself.

And what’s the actual bill? The link makes it sound like 38-1 is an addendum to a proposed bill, and I think the unicameral is currently listening to revisions, not any new bills.

I don't think it would ruin archery hunting but hunting the early phase of the rut is a great time for archery. The only pro I can see is possibly spreading out some pressure if landowners are tagged out. . . Most hunting land owners that I know either allow some hunting already, or won't. Them shooting a deer earlier won't change much.

Senator Hughes and senator Eardman are both very pro large land owner and are also proposing bills to stop game and parks purchasing any new land for public use LB863 I believe, and looking to make a proposal that at least 3 of the 5 game and parks commissioners must have their primary income from agriculture. . .

I support Ag, but when Ag makes wild life decisions it typically trends towards less wildlife.

Also there will be lost funds as free tags do not count for Pittman Robertson match.

I do not see any pros either. If a landowner wants to control population, grant more permission to hunt on their land.

Any updates on this one by chance? Was trying to find it but my google-fu is failing me. Was looking to do some non-resident Nebraska hunting this year.

It is LB126. Sounds like it is about a done deal. You can still easily hunt Nebraska as a nonres if you’d like, it’s just that landowners will get an extra rifle season all to themselves the week prior to the rest of us. I really hate the idea of it but I’m likely in the minority in Nebraska.

Thanks bud. Not sure why I was struggling finding it. Will most likely still come visit and hunt anyway. I kinda get it being a landowner in other states but also see how that could have some big cons all around also.

That’s interesting, someone told me it was shot down.

Everyone is freaking out that there will be a huge change and some threatening to never hunt their home state again because it’s going to “ruin” the state. But I just don’t see it being an issue. The landowners that will get a free tag, already got one at $13 before so it’s not like you’ll gain many hunters at all that weren’t hunting before. And the landowners that are serious enough about hunting probably didn’t let anyone hunt their place anyways. And unless they’re changing things, the only land that a landowner can hunt on is their own.

In regards to the western side of the state, I just don’t see it changing much. I’ll add that I am a landowner in the western side of the state. Can not speak for the east side where the land tracts are smaller.

Well, idk, maybe it was shot down, I thought it had one more step to go and was in, honestly haven’t been following too close. I think it just feels like a kick in the ass to people that don’t own land. My family owns a farm in eastern Nebraska that I hunt as well and this will minimally affect my hunting really if at all, unless I’m bow hunting public property next to private that week. I am all for landowners getting cheap, even free permits, but a special rifle season to themselves outside of depredation permits seems a little bit ridiculous. I just don’t see why they need a “special” season when they have September till the end of December to get on the Buck they’ve been watching.
