I don't think punishment was ever meant to "heal wounds". It was/is meant to punish the offender of the crime, and hopefully to deter other's from doing the same. That's why crime has soared through the roof.......some people feel that punishment isn't warranted for criminal acts anymore. So, no punishment and no deterrents......well, that will lead to more crime.......and/or more negligent actions.

How many people would speed if the penalty was 20 years in prison? I wouldn't. That's what punishments are designed to do. And currently.....if I'm driving under the speed limit, I'm asleep at the wheel.

I agree completely with your points…..this is just such an unusual case of “murder”. There is no way this case will change the behavior of future hunters, it’s just not far reaching or common enough….yet I’m sure there are many accidental hunter deaths every year, that are just as “negligent”, basic hunter safet stuff.

For poor comparison…..I speed all the time. If I run over and kill a jaywalker while speeding, should I go to jail? Help make an example of me to society? Come on….also I’m not sure the stats of DUI deaths, but the drunk tank is full every night.

Idk i think a better comparison would be if you were speeding and hit someone that wasn't jaywalking, but in a designated crosswalk. Still alot different tho. I remember around here someone hit somebody on the freeway in the middle of the night and they didn't get in trouble, obviously no one should expect to see people walking in the middle of the freeway

Your thought process lacks common sense on all fronts.

You forgot to add "IMO". Because that's all it is. An opinion.

Just so you know, trespassing on government property is also a 4th degree felony. This includes reservation (tribal lands) without the appropriate permit. You gonna hang someone for that as well?

Are you by chance the DA for portland oregon? Just kidding haha. But he sure doesnt seem to think any of our criminals deserve jailtime either.. its not working out IMO, if you break the law there should be consequences, otherwise there is no incentive to abide by the law. Not saying i have an opinion on this specific guy in terms of punishment, but i dont think id like to share the woods with him personally. Just my opinion

You may not want to share the woods with him, but you do already share the woods with others like him.

Nowhere ever did I say some sort of restitution isn't warranted. I did ask what good will jail time really do? Will it really correct his behavior going forward? Nope. He's learned that lesson in ways not a single swinging _____ on this forum ever will. A DWI offender is a greater menace to society because these people are just as reckless with lesser penalties most of the time...

Laws and the consequences of violating them are only a deterrent to generally law abiding people.

If a person is so inclined, sober or not, they’re going to violate the law. Do believe a previous post was spot on: poor impulse control causes a lot of folks’ problems.

Yes im aware there are other like him, i also dont wsnt them in the woods with me in a perfect world and if they do the same thing as him i hope they would be charged too. He killed a guy, i don't think "restitution" is enough. Do you know him or something? How do you know if he's learned his lesson at all?

If he had killed someone while drunk driving i would hope he would've been charged with manslaughter as well. Especially if i was related to the victim
