Well ive mentioned it on a few other threads here, but Id thought I'd break down my trip of a life time Ill be going on, gear to be used, training, and scouting trips! On September 1st ill be putting all of my belongings in storage, giving my land lord back my house keys, packing up my truck, and heading out to fill all of my tags or the season closes! Ive the former Ill head over to Idaho to deer and elk hunt with a good friend of mine, and then maybe washington if time and funds allow.

Im at a stage in my life where I can make it happen and not suffer much consequence. 20 years old, fresh out of college, and making decent money at my job for the summer that will allow me to save enough for this trip. Some may call it irresponsible, some may call it awesome, Im not sure what to think of it myself, just know I need to do it while I can. Ill be filming the whole experience and making a film at the end of the trip to share with everyone. Heres a little taste of our filming style, through a little intro together from some of our spring bear footage. It'll be about my experience more so than getting kills on film.

The main focus of the trip will be killing my first elk, I wont even consider focusing on deer, antelope or bear until that tag is finally filled. If a nice mule deer buck gets in the way while im elk hunting I may just let him have it though.

Ill have A and B elk tags, A and B deer tags, archery antelope tag, and a bear tag.

My plan is to hunt an area Ive been familiar with the last few years. Im going to set up my base camp and live/hunt from there. I will be doing quite a bit of back country hunting as long as the weather allows for it. Ill have to move camp every 3 weeks as I will be on forest service land and that is there rule.

My base camp will be comprised of a 10x10 Outback Lodge by Cabelas, Mr. Buddy heater, queen size air mattress, lanterns etc.

Camera gear- Canon t4i, Rode videomic, telephoto lense (still deciding which one I want) I have a gopro as well that ill be bringing.

Pack- Cabelas pack frame and 3200 CI bag. Were gunna see how she holds up over 3 months. It seems to still be running well so we will see. I have a badlands 2200 ill be bring but probably wont use much.

Boots- Danner Pronghorns. Theyve worked well for a few years now. Im considering picking up a pair of asolo fugitives though.

Bow- Id love to buy a new bow this year but im afraid it will hinder me from meeting my financial goal- so ill still be running my '10 Mission Maniac as of now.

Rifle- Savage 116 270 running 150 grain partitions, should be good elk medicine.

Heres a thread on all of my back country gear that ive posted before http://www.rokslide.com/forums/showthread.php?7480-Back-Country-On-A-Budget

If anyone has gear they want torture tested PM me and ill put it through its paces and return it at the end of the season ;)

My job keeps me in real good shape and on the weekends Im either on a back packing trip or scouting with my full kit (the best type of training IMO) If Im not in the mountains I run and take walks with my pack loaded down. I try and eat as healthy as possible and feel like im in the best shape of my life!!

Ill be posting pics as more gear comes in, training and scouting progresses, and I finalize some other things.

Free to post suggestions for gear or PM me if you want to chat more about my trip!

Very excited to hear how this all goes for you man. Wow, I would love to be able to turn in my keys and sign out for three months like that. I graduated college a year ago now and still haven't done something like this. Good luck and please keep us updated

I agree!! Do it now if you can. Sounds like something I would have done back then. There will be very physically challenging and mental drain but keep your spirits and chin up! Never never never give up-Winston Churchill. If you can do it, give it your all because you will NEVER regret it unless you don't give it everything. Just trying to give you some advice and encouragement. Wish you luck and keep us informed please.

Thanks for all of the support guys! elkflunky, I know its going to be a huge drain both mentally and physically, and almost my entire purpose of the trip. Its going to break me down and spit me out, hopefully a new man with a new outlook on life.

That it will be. I went to guide school in MT back in 1993 and did something similar that you are doing here. I quit my job and came to MT to make this happen. I did it to not actually become a guide but to learn about elk hunting and see the west and the mountains. I will never regret it as you most likely will not regret what you are doing. Most important thing is be safe and enjoy yourself.

Sounds like fun! It is a good time in life to do that sort of thing. I did it when I was 20. Spent five weeks in Idaho hunting and camping. Loved every minute of it. Came back flat broke...I had the insight to pay for two months rent before I left. LOL! Enjoy!

It sounds to me like a fabulous idea. If you can financially swing it, go for it. It won't get any easier to do this kind of trip when you get older and have commitments that may not allow it.

If I were you, I'd really focus on what you want out of this trip and write it down in a journal. Reflect back on that from time to time, when you are tired, discouraged, or maybe to the point that you aren't having fun. It can happen if you let it. If you keep things in perspective it won't. Enjoy the time with your friends, hunt as hard as you can, but don't forget that the events along the way are what make an adventure, not the end result.

I can't wait to hear your updates, and hope that this trip turns out to be all that you want it to be.

Thats a great idea that Im going to take up Jason. My biggest pitfall is hunting myself into the ground, getting discouraged, and going home. Its been a mental battle for a few years but after this years bear season I feel more mentally prepared then ever. Ive come to realize that its necessary and acceptable for me to "take days off" to sleep in, go fishing or what have to recoup and still enjoy myself through out the whole trip.

Thanks for all of the support everyone, ive had more than a few people tell me Im crazy so far haha

Funny, yesterday I was telling my 17 year old to think like you. Don't get hung up on following the conventional life expectations and just go experience life.

I didn't do enough of that when I was young and trying to catch up at 50 is tough!

Good luck.

Got some new "mullet arrows" as Evan Williams would say :) Easton Axis 400s, wraps and zebra print blazers, cut at 27 inches, tipped with 100 grain shuttle t's. Paper tuned and flying like darts. Got some shooting in a rain/thunder storm today.

Yuh know thats how ive always lived. Just always trying to get the most out of life. I see so many of my old friends settled down, having kids, and living in our home town. Aint nothing wrong with it, and to most thats all that makes them happy. Me, I need the adventure and excitement of the unknown. It frustrates some people to see me live the way I do, they'd rather me start a career early on and be "successful" but im not ready for that kind of commitment just yet, ill be very successful some day and I know I will, but for the time being Im just living.
