Just got some of Elk Nuts dvds in the mail yesterday. Couldnt sleep in past 530 this morning so ive been watching them ever since.. All I can say is WOW! There was so many situations last year where I was in the elk and said the wrong things at the wrong time and could never figure out why they werent coming in! It all makes so much more sense to me now. I feel 100% more confident for this season and even more pumped.
Some really helpful techniques he focused on in Worst Than Wolves was how to hunt the early season when the bulls just arent vocal. I used to never even hunt the first week of the season, along with most others I know. I have several places in mind where these techniques would work very effectively.
Thanks Paul! :)

Just did my first scouting trip of the year yesterday and today, had some new gear to test out and seal the seams on my tent too. Got a tip on how to hunt the area ive been hunting from a local hunting legend and pure elk slayer, gave it a shot today and it was a success.
I left the truck at 4:45 and by first light I had an encounter with a young blonde bear, he got to close for comfort and things got fairly serious, made me drop my camera but I got some of it on film. Half mile up the trail I found a nice six point bull grazing in a drainage. Continued the 4 miles up to tree line and was there before the sun hit the bowl. I made excellent time and I feel like I never have been in better mountain shape! Those steep ridges were nothing.
Anyways, climbed up the ridge and ridge ran it for a little while before finding 4 bedded bulls with three developing into six points, the other looked to be a raghorn.
Saw some goats in the rocks and some awesome views. I was done with my 10.2 mile trip by noon. Ill be posting a video soon.

Got some new gear in lately that I thought Id share.
I have to say Ethan S. is a stand up guy! He sent me his Kuiu Icon 6000 to use for the season free of charge and only expects that I use it as intended and hunt hard! Ill return it at the end of the season with hopefully some new blood stains on it. Cant say how grateful I am to be able to use it and not have to lug around my clunky old pack frame. Thanks again Ethan. I really like the lay out of the pack and how well it compresses down to a day pack.

I also got a new tripod, the slick 340ez. A great tripod for the money, a bit heavier than I expected but she is sturdy and has a ton of cool features. Will be a lot better for filming with a much smoother pan. Here it is with my Minox MD50 on it

Heres the Garmin Oregon 450t I got on sale for only 200 bucks! So much more peace of mind in the back country with a gps. Ive never owned one before but this thing is really easy to use, can see things easily on the screen, and has a ton of great features that I find useful.

This is the Cabelas Outback Lodge 10x10. Im in love with it haha Its going to make my stay in the mountains very comfortable and I can put a ton of gear in it, its very nice to be able to stand up in it in the morning. I also got a little mr. buddy heater to go along with it, should do enough to take the chill off in the mornings.

If you have any questions on the gear im using and want some reviews ask away!

I like the Idea. I think if I were to talk to myself 20 years ago I would encourage me to go do a big walkabout prior to "settling down". Problem is at that age I wasn't seasoned enough in the outdoors to really make a go of it.

I have a cousin in law whose company granted a six-week PAID sabbatical. Right now she is following her dreams and travelling and climbing all over the West.

(Both her kids are out of the house).

JonBoy I will be interested to see your change in perspective towards life and goals at the end of this adventure.

Be sure to document your mindset about life and values.

Good Luck.

This is about half of it...im trying to get everything really organized and easy to find so im not digging through so much stuff all the time.

Two of my best friends have taken some time off work and our planning to spend two weeks with me some time in late September. Im sure after three weeks I will be welcoming there company haha if all goes as planned and I fill my bull tag, a good friend of mine who lives in Pocatello and I will be throwing together a fly in hunt into the Frank. We will see if that materializes or not but it sounds like a good time. Hes suppose to be planning that one and finding out what the least amount of notice Mccall Air needs to make it happen...I have no idea so we will see.

Yesterday was my 26th day in a row at work. I am jealous. You'll have a great trip, there'll be plenty of time to work later.

Like someone else posted, without obligations, no one can claim you're irresponsible. Choose your responsibilities and obligations carefully.

Well boys my last day of work was yesterday. It was a strange feeling leaving the shop for the last time knowing I wasnt coming back. I helped rebuild the company and made some great positive changes. I was made a crew lead the second week I worked there and my crew soon became known as the A Team. We flat got stuff done. My boss handed me a letter of recommendation and told me I was one of the best employees hes ever had after being in business for over 30 years. It felt good knowing I had made a positive impact.
Here I am packing up the rest of my stuff getting ready to start a new chapter of my life, it really is strange.
Ive set some goals and accomplished all of them over the last two years since I started college out here. Now its time to move on to my biggest goal thats been in the making for nearly a decade since the day I first started hunting (Oct. 10th 2003) Here we go! Im going to spend the weekend resting and eating well and should be heading out on Monday.
