My New Knight Mountaineer in Nitrate Setup

I feel lucky to have gotten one of the last 50 cal in nitrate Knight will offer as they are going another direction per Knight.
I love this thing, special thanks to Sabotloader for his help answering questions.
Setting this up for Oregon with rear peep, Williams fiber optic and hood on the front.
Shooting 460grains NE with Ox yoke .54 cal wool wad, rws 1075 cap, and 70grains of t7 2f put 2 1.25" apart at 100 yards with open sights.
Just received some bullshop 460s to try out. Hope to go elk hunting with it.

Sabotloader helped me settle on a Knight Mountaineer as well. That gentleman is a treasure trove of information and experience and is more than willing to help, in my opinion.
My Mountaineer is stainless and I have mostly burned Blackhorn 209 in it, shooting Bull Shop and No Excuses at 460 grain with vegetable fiber wads. I have seen similar accuracy. I will likely switch from the 209 ignition to No 11 as I prefer Triple7 as well. Hopefully you will get to see how effective big lead bullets dispatch elk with your new setup. It looks fantastic, BTW...

Bob, Which size front sight did you end up using?

Another bullet you might look at as suggested above is the Bull Shop 400 LGP lead conical.

I'm just concerned about low light with a globe versus the thin fiber optic. I wish someone could create a fine cross hair globe that's fiber optic. I have a cross hair globe but haven't used it yet as most say you can't see through it in low light.

I went with a Lee Shaver globe and found the crosshair card/insert was too fine to see in low light as well. This is what I found to do the trick... the Shaver came with several sight inserts and among the choices was what I would call a "medium post". This is similar to a front sight post when viewed through the aperture. Your aiming reference is the very top edge of the post, centered, of course. Now this is going to sound strange, but bear with me. Put that sight insert in the globe with the post coming down from the top; as in from the 12 o'clock position. I do this because I don't want my aiming reference to completely block out my target when a "hold-over' is required on a longer shot. I used this setup on an elk hunt that took me 10 years to draw. It took a little getting used to but I really appreciate not obscuring my target with the sight on longer shots where a holdover is required. I had much better ability to see this sight in low light. I was able to hold under 4 inch groups at 200 yards with 80g of BH209 and 460g NE, shooting prone off of a bipod. I sight in for 100 yards and found my bullet dropped 14 inches at 200. Of course after prepping for a long shot above timberline I got my shot on a nice bull at 70 yards while he was shredding some aspen trees. He never knew what hit him....

The only thing I did different was to change the red fiber for a green fiber. It provides a much better contrast. when the sight is on the target.

Plus use a 6 O'clock hold on the target so the fiber doesn't cover the target spot.

I bought a Mountaineer out of the classifieds here and it has a Lee Shaver globe. Nice setup, but coming from archery I already know I’d prefer a fiber.

Has anyone created a smaller diameter fiber front pin? I’m used to looking at a 0.010” or 0.019” in archery, and find the standard muzzleloader 0.060” pins are giant, especially if aiming longer distances.

I’ve considered painting the globe pin in glow in the dark paint, but I’m not expecting it to be very bright.

A Day-Glo orange or even the day glow green just might do the trick!
