My mountain goat points went from 15 to 0? Colorado G13! UPDATE, BIG BILLY DOWN!

Yep, so it looks like I finally drew a goat tag. G13.

Any Roksliders hunted goats in G13?

I've been in and around a lot of the unit elk/deer hunting. So I'm pretty familiar with some of the area. I used to see billy's hanging out in a drainage I could see from one of my elk spots. I'll probably start there. (assumed they were billy's usually solo or sometimes a pair)

It's going to be a fun summer!

BGG

p.s.
ignore my screen name. I've never hunted goats before. That's a nickname from my younger days. LOL!

BGG,

A huge congrats, my friend!

I have been on some goat hunts (never as the tagholder unfortunately), and those are some of my all time favorite hunts.

Have fun!

BGG, depending on what time you come to hunt, I would love to tag along if you need a packer. I'm sure some other Colorado guys with knowledge of the unit will offer the same though.

Congrats, I'm extremely jealous!

Thanks for the offer Tanner. I would welcome the company. Lots of my friends say they want to help/tag along and they never do.
I've drawn archery sheep twice and hunted solo both times.

I drew the late season. 9/19-10/5

There are 6 fourteener's and 64 points over 13k in the unit LOL!

Thanks everybody, I'm looking forward to it.

Anyone who has hunted goats. At what age class would you consider a mature animal? 2,3,4,5+? looking at the harvest stats lots of varying ages but horn length appears to be close after say 2-3. I don't really care if I harvest a billy or a nanny. I just want to try my best to harvest a mature animal.

I'll take any incite from anyone who has hunted goats or been on goat hunts.

Thanks,BGG

Most of mature billies I've seen have been off by there self. And horn length is horn length, but if your looking for maturity firts, look at there front half. Mature billies chest and shoulders will be well developed, and look improper roomed to there rear end. I have seen mature nannies, intermixed with younger nannies. Those animals will be obvious. There are a lot of videos about gender identification. Spend some time watching those guys.

I'm sure you will have a great time, and no matter what, enjoy your hunt. Take in every minute your up on the hill, and love the pain of pack that goat off the mountain.

is this a archery goat tag you drew??

It's a rifle tag. The archery only units are much harder to draw. I'll probably take both rifle and bow and let the terrain determine if a bow stalk is feasible or not.
Only one bow kill in the unit since 09. I've been bow hunting for 25 years, but also have rifle hunted off and on as well. So I wont be disappointed if I cant get it done with a bow as long as I get it done.

fire arrow,
Do you have any specific video titles I can look up? or any good books? I'm going to spend the next couple months educating my self as much as I can

BGG-

Congrats on the tag. I cannot believe it took 15 years but it will be well worth the wait!

Shoot me a PM. I know the unit well and should have a couple of good starting points. My dad hunted the unit 5 years ago and killed a 7 year old nanny. There are lots of places that hold goats that get overlooked because not many want to work for it. I also spend a good majority of my summer in the unit and will keep an eye out for some animals.

CO fish and game has video's that show you the difference between males and females. When I get a chance I will find it and post it. There were a could of good YouTube videos also. I'll try and find them. When you look at pictures of goats that are up close, even hunting pictures, look at the size of the bases, and how close the bases are. Also look at or compare the thickness of the bases, and how much the horns sweep backwards.

If ya want shoot me your email address and I will send you some pictures of some goats for reference.

BGG - I drew a rifle goat tag in G13 back in 2005. Spent all the summer weekends above treeline through that area. Best summer of my life. Filled my tag with a billy when the season came around.

PM me when you're ready, and I'll share scouting notes and my "lessons learned" with you. I live in the Black Forest area as well.

Until then - start a hiking conditioning routine :)
