My first Tikka

Is it a smart idea to upgrade the recoil lug on these rifles with the mountain tactical bombproof recoil lug? Or is it not really necessary? I'm not trying spending more money on this rifle, but If its highly recommended, I will grab one..

Definitely not. I think the mountain tactical lugs are more likely to be a downgrade than an upgrade vs what comes with a T3x. The prior gen T3 used aluminum recoil lugs that could deform over time with use.

Good to know. I was thinking about changing it out when I cerakote the barrel. I will leave the stock lug.

Since you didn't mention it - you'd need a 308 barrel and that's really all you'd NEED to turn a 30-06 into a 308. 308 might feed ok from 30-06 magazine and you'd just have a slightly longer bolt travel than necessary without swapping bolt stops.
Gotcha. I thought the barrels were the same between the two. This is not something I was going to mess with. It was just a thought... I already have a tack driver 308 :)

Rifle Chambers are machined into the barrels and the chambers need to fit the cartridge within thousandths of an inch. 308 and 30-06 ammunition is not close to the same size.

I finally got around to sighting in my rifle over the weekend. I've got a spring bear hunt coming up in the next few weeks. Overall, I'm pretty darn impressed with the Tikka. Didn't take much to get it on paper, and it was shooting great groups.

The first ammo I tried out was Federal Terminal Ascent. My previous 30-06 shot it pretty well. The Tikka was pretty consistent

with the first two bullets being super close, but the 3rd being a little bit of a flyer. Not a bad group, and totally usable.
2.jpgNext, I tried out some Remington Speer Impact Premier Long Range. My Tikka really liked it. I'm planning on running it this season. (disregard the other shots. They were from my 308 I was getting on paper...)

I really dig the Tikka. Very comfortable to shoot.
