I was hunting California with proper deer and bear tags. Bear season runs concurrent with deer in my unit. I also hunt Oregon as a non res, with fall bear running Aug 1st to Dec 31st. Oregon deer starts Oct 4 I believe here on the coast.

Ammo were 180gr copper I believe but not sure. I got them years ago and no longer have the box. Researching replacements.

Fantastic story and quick action on your kid's part. As for replacement ammo, might I recommend Underwood 220gr Hard Casts?

This is a short story Boar that I had to stalk up to bench he was on in order to make sure there was no cubs around. I thought it was going to keep feeding at the rate it was westward on the bench, I was on a bench below setting up a Blacktail cam/lick location. I got to 10 yards before the bench before it started getting hard not to make noise, right when I was thinking man this thing must have heard that crunch, boom, it popped over the edge of the bench ears propped forward looking down on me, i'll never forget he looked like he had a hard time seeing and just woke up from a nap. He immediately starts hopping over the deadfalls coming right at me, I yelled and shouldered my .300wm at the same time and put one in his chest when he was mid flight over a log. Thankfully I hit him it was a scoped rifle too. I wasn't sure if he was going to make contact or not, years later and reading James Gary Sheltons books more carefully I now 110% percent think this thing was in fact predatorily attacking me. Lots of Deer in the area probably thought I was one from up above like that.

He got knocked down mid air and just sat on his but. I racked another round in disbelief of what just happened. He started biting his leg viciously like he got stung by a bee or something then stopped and looked like he had a heart attack and collapsed and rolled basically right to my feet! What a crazy day that was, I went back to finishing my lick/setting the cam then had to get him unjammed out of blowdowns (almost thought it was not possible, I was solo). I get to working on him and low and behold what he was biting his leg for was because my mushroomed bullet was stopped by his hide. Went through his chest (coming at me) and went all the way through his cavity and through his leg and slowed down right at the right time for his last piece of skin to stop, when the ting hit my knife working on him I knew right away why he was nipping his leg ferociously.

They seem to be able to go for a minute or two strong with their hearts blown out, like nothing else in north america it seems.

First pics actually taken with the cam. Left the gutless method carcass there to see what else feeds and this good sized Lion walked by.

Be careful out there guys and never let your guard down. NEVER underestimate Black Bears, as when they attack, it is a high likelyhood of it being predatory in nature and won't stop until you fight it off or it's eating you.

I also would lean towards the 200 grain underwood or buffalo bore hardcast in the 10mm. Some have had difficulty with the 220 grain ammo stabilizing but I've never shot them so
it might be internet BS.

I have a few black bears on camera on the farm and I hunt w a scoped rifle. This makes me think it might be a good idea to mount a dr optic.

One thing for sure? The younger boy? You need to immediately get him back out hunting again ASAP.. or.. he'll forever let that fear PREVENT him from going out again.

I cant say what the bears would have done in the last 10 or 15 feet if I hadnt been shooting. They showed no signs of stopping until round 4 or so. I believe 100% we would be dead if I wasnt shooting.

Ive been bluffed before and that bear slammed on the brakes, chomped her teeth etc. These guys did none of that. I believe the noise of the 10mm prevented catastrophe. I focused on shooting one of the 2 bears, I only found 2 of the 5 10mm slugs, so I assume the noise did it.

After thawing the head and skinning it, we found 10mm slugs had entered the mouth and shattered the jaw. That is what stopped him.

You said that you were 1 Glock malfunction away from being mauled. However, it didn't malfunction and it did its job even with inferior ammo. I have a Glock G20 10mm that is a Gen 2 purchased in 1994. It has over 6000 rounds through it and I still trust it with my life. I have and love wheel guns but get tired of hearing the 10mm isn't a good woods carry gun. Yes, a 44 magnum is more powerful. They both have their pros and cons. Glad you and your boys are OK.
