I’m pretty new to the muzzleloading field and I am preparing for my first mule deer hunt and am curious as to what people carry in the field while hunting. All of the muzzleloader hunting I’ll be doing will be backpack hunting, so going back to the truck to clean it or grab powder isn’t really something I’ll be doing. What do you guys carry for cleaning supplies in the mountains? How many rounds are you bringing? Thanks.

Going over mine for my first ML mule deer hunt as well.
10 charge tubes, 10 bullets, primers (at least 15), ball handle, bullet starter (rarely ever use), moist patches in a ziplock, dry patches in ziplock, plug wrench, scewdriver, spare fron sights, some teflon tape, and electrical tape.

I carry 6 to 10 or so speed loaders (depends on truck hunting or backpack hunting). Two to three in my pocket with a t-handle and some loose 209s, and the rest in my pack. I wear a multitool on my belt.

In my pack:
Extra speedloaders
Bipod/shooting sticks/tripod
Spare T-handle
Extra 209s
Patches
Duct tape or elect tape (for muzzle)
Cleaning jag
Plug wrench
Spare front sight fiber optic insert
Screw driver/hex wrench to remove barrel from stock

In the truck:
Spare ramrod
Extra powder/bullets/209s
Spare rifle (sometimes)
Cleaning kit

Do you typically tape over the muzzle while carrying in the field?

I don’t carry cleaning supplies in my pack but do have some in the truck. Nothing fancy just some TC cleaner and bore butter and some patches. I do tape the muzzle depending on the weather. I carry 6 speed loads and 2 p-cap loaders one around my neck and one in my bino harness. I keep my speed loaders in a ziploc bag also in my bino harness. I do carry a replacement fiber front site in my pack. I also carry a CO2 load pusher to get rid of a load if I think it has been compromised. Not sure how many days you will be backpacking but I would bring extra sealed speed loads as a back up if you get a lot of moisture.

I used to do the electrical tape thing over my muzzle, but have found that finger cots (thing tiny little condoms) work better, especially if you get caught in wet weather. You can typically find them at a drug store like walgreens or rite aid, or at walmart. I keep a couple extras in the bottom of my bino harness as spares.

I find that they don’t stay on the barrel worth a damn if you’re in any brush at all. But at least they’re cheap - 200 for ~$8 on Amazon.
