Muzzle Brake Design, top ports on ultralight build?

6.5 creed - Howa Superlite 20" Barreled Action - Stockys vg2 = Sub 6lb Scoped & loaded.

Given the build and barrel profile is so light. What should my considerations be when looking for a brake.

1. SRS Ti brake; is the tiny sufficient or should I go bigger to help absorb more recoil given its so light?

2. APA Answer with top ports. While heavier (2.2oz), the top ports may help better control muzzle rise, I am not sure how much downward pressure should be on that thin of a barrel.

I’m doing literally this same build, except I put a slightly heavier scope on so I’m a touch over 6lb. BUT - the 100% lightest brake is the MuzzleBrakesand More micro beast ti 1 piece, except it requires that you have a gunsmith time it, or use shims. 1.1 oz, angled ports to combat the muzzle rise.

I’m a little cheap, so I bought the Answer. Still waiting on my stock so I haven’t shot it yet though.

You should consider if you are shooting prone or not. Small brakes don't weigh that much even in steel.

I don't know how sensitive you are to recoil and noise, but the extra noise may be more bothersome than the recoil. That being said, it's a 6.5 Creed, so most people will probably be handle the recoil.

Would you keep me updated how you like it?

SRS Pro Ti Tiny weighs 0.65oz, which is the lightest I could find. Just not sure I want to commit $200+ on it or not (including the smith to install).

I do shoot prone and just about everything else when hunting, depending on the situation. I never have tried spotting shots when hunting so I am not sure how much of a difference that makes or not.

I am sensitive to noise though.

Will do! I think I shied away from the pro tiny because I could only get it in 5/8-24, and the superlite is 1/2-28. But I’d guess they’d make ya a smaller version if you asked.

I’m in the same boat - I figured 1 oz would hurt less than the 2x cost of the others… I do think it looks way cleaner with a tapered/dia matched small dia brake.

Also, Nate at MBM will taper the brake to your barrel dia if you like. He’s a solid dude.

Any updates on this?

I have a sub 5lb scoped 6.5 CM that I’m thinking about putting a brake on. The recoil is snappy, but not bad - I’m more interested in controlling the muzzle rise. For that, the top ports seem to make sense, just interested in how they actually work out.

I haven't. My dad runs the PVA jetblast on 5.5lb .308, it works well but no where near being able to spot shots or muzzle rise is just OK.

Well, a significant update. I got my gun put together and did the whole barrel break in thing today - shoot/clean every shot for 5, then shoot/clean every 3 for a few more groups. Anyway. Shoots so smooth with “the answer” on the end. I found myself slightly up/left after shooting, but I only had 4/8 ports open, so I’m interested in how it’ll do with more ports open.

Rifle weighs out at 6lb 9.7 oz unloaded.

Best group I shot was a touch over an inch, but it was 35, windy, and I was using the cheap American whitetail ammo from hornady for break in. I expect to be able to do better with hand loads.

Recoil is downright negligible. SO good to shoot.

I should’ve put low rings on it, but ya live and ya learn.

Final update on shooting this, since there were some other questions I didn’t answer-

I shot the rifle again the other day, Accuracy with the American whitetail ammo from hornady remains so-so. After I put the factory 143 ELDX in it though, its lights out. Shot 2 groups back to back, 3 rounds each, 100 yd, at .74 and .54”. Those were the only 6 shots I took at paper, off the bench. I then went up to our long range with my remaining 4 shots, and shot at 635 yd, hit 2 of 2 times, and dialed up to 1078, where I missed once just right, then hit on the 2nd shot. I’m JAZZED, to say the least.

The APA “answer” brake works great. I’ve got the first 4 ports on the top open. We shot prone in the snow at the longer range and nothing came back at me. It really drops the recoil. Pretty impressive, really.

I took a video of the barrel oscillations in slow motion (idk why, mostly interesting) and the initial impulse looks to push the muzzle down significantly. I probably won’t change it since it shoots so good, but that was just my observation. I wonder what would happen with fewer ports open. I‘ve not shot off a bipod yet, only bags, so I haven’t tried tracking shots but the 4 shots I took at long range. I can’t comment on muzzle rise anyway, but from the slow motion, the gun barely moves when I shoot.

Anyway. That’s what I know. Definitely recommend “The Answer”

I should say - I’m not good at tracking shots yet anyway, this is only my 2nd time shooting past 400 at a range… technique is likely more to blame than the muzzle rise on the shot. I’d only feel qualified to comment if I had a reasonable frame of reference for what I SHOULD feel. I’ve got more tinkering with my technique to do I suppose.

Thanks for the detail. I just ordered one as I couldn't justify the cost of the more expensive SRS brakes on a mild round with a budget build.

I am considering leaving the last 4 open instead. That way the first and second row of ports are most effective at recoil reduction. Probably overthinking it.

It might do more for recoil, but even with the first 4 open, there’s HARDLY any recoil. The thing shoots like a DREAM!!
