Hey all I recently got my musk ox back from Nunavut. It was beetle cleaned was supposed to be a full skull but a clown at advanced taxidermy took it upon themselves to just chop the skull off so Im having to use the real horns I was going to do a skull mount and have replicas made. Anyway does anyone know how to safely degrease this thing Ive never done a horned animal with non removable horns? Thanks

This post doesn't make sense. Post some photos.
Do you have the full skull or not ? Something is lost in translation. Something sounds cut
Everywhere but the USA a true Euro skull mount the skull is cut long ways from middle of nose to where the spine connects to the skull.

The taxidermist in Edmonton(?) drilled holes in a bunch of areas of the bottom of horns near skull and through the skull. What or how he did or put in there I have no idea. I had it for a while, but now its at the taxidermist so I can't get you pics

Was supposed to be the entire skull, and it sure wasnt this color

Yes i had a deposit down for a skull cap replica to put on the mount and had ordered the skull be beetle cleaned to keep and pick up but that went out the window

It was advanced taxidermy in Ontario you should see the caribou antlers also supposed to be beetle cleaned

Man, I am so sad to hear this. I was hoping my musk ox would go to them thinking I could drive up and bring it home myself. As it turns out, mine went to J&B Taxidermy in Alberta and while it cost a fortune for shipping, I have learned so much and become fast friends with Joey the owner. Heck of a hunter and a master taxidermist.

Nunavut is a pretty huge undertaking so hopefully this will help some future hunters with their planning.

I’m curious how the communication was with Advanced Taxidermy? J&B went over ALL the options on the phone and then once we agreed, he wrote up a work order and sent it to me to approve before moving forward.

Looks like they thought you wanted a head mount/lifesize. Going to be tough to get a euro there and my research shows making a replica is nearly impossible.

looks like they boiled it instead. Plus the skull will be hard to replicate, and rightly expensive to try. You got served on that one buddy. Damn. I'm sorry this still happens in 2026+

A friend of mine bought some beetles online and now cleans her skulls at home as a hobby. Kind of makes me want to try it too. A reliable and available Taxi is as rare as a golden unicorn these days.

This is why I haven't anything professionally taxi'd in 30 years. My brother has done a couple for me, but that's it. I've euro'd a bunch on my own and skull mounted a few, but all my horns mostly go into piles now.

Yea both made book to. I got a full refund wanted more but considering what leagal fees would be id end up losing money. Be glad yours didnt go there. Communication sucked before I even put my order in for what I wanted someone there hacked the skull off they never said anything I paid for the full skull and then when i opened the crate and I called they acted like i was wrong. I told Shane about it also. Yours looks fantastic

Hunters Union out of Salmon Arm, BC does a great job on Musk Ox full skull Euros. They developed the technique for musk ox nearly a decade ago (mine was their first)

Best around! And for any skulls for that matter. They are not a taxidermy business, strictly skulls. Talk to Deena or her husband Chad.

Ok now I get the situation. Your English is hard to understand and the terminology your using is inconsistent. I can see why they may have had a misunderstanding and got lost in translation.
You want a European skull mount.
I do not see any holes in the photos that were drilled. Those are holes that connect tissue to the brain and eyes and mouth etc etc. those are natural from what I see in photos.
If you came into my shop and asked for a SKULL CAP. What you have is exactly what you'd get. Just the cap. When I take in sheep, goats, antelope and someone wants a skull cap reproduction you get just the skull cap. So you can use it for a shoulder mt or life-size.
Now if you had asked for a beetle cleaned skull and a skull cap reproduction then that's a different story.
These large shops ,your rarely talking to the people that actually do the work, your talking to a receptionist or book keeper.

On another note. What you see with the discoloration is what's called "the boss " it's the same with cape buffalo . It's the growth part of the horn. They always needs epoxied and painted. It will always discolor regardless of how it's done .
To get a Reproduction skull that'll work and fit is gonna be a lot of time and money. You'd need a skull that's close to size. So buying a new skull and then molding and casting the new skull and then cutting out the casting of the new skull to fit and epoxy the old horns on.
I'm not sure what prices they quoted you . But at minimum if someone brought me a musk of skull to be cleaned and then also to get a nice high quality cast job. You'd be looking at minimum of 3500. The amount of silicone and urethane and painting would be a week or two of work . So if you do go again and looking at getting same work done . And for other people that might be reading this post . If it's less than that cost ,your probably not on the same page or something's off.
Now if you wanted more castings then it gets cheaper because the mold is already made. It's a matter of urethanes cost and painting and time. Most of the cost is in molding itself .
I wish you luck .
The best thing to do to cut your loss is just get someone to epoxy and paint the boss and put it on the wall plaque or make a pedestal for the table with it.

Oh I wasnt going through them for the reproduction, they were just instructed to beetle clean the skull (euro). The reproduction was going to be done in the US. It was 575 for the beetle cleaned skull from advanced. The reproduction was going to be by gross b&c score the antlerman was going to do it. I wasnt worried about the cost of my taxidermy bill. Just wanted both seeing as though Id likely never get another as the hunt was cool but not so excited id go back for that animal.
