Mtn lion hunt/disaster

Booked a mtn lion hunt with an outfitter in Wyoming back in 2021. I booked an on call hunt in order to give myself the best odds for the best conditions especially due to me traveling from Alaska and the added logistics and cost of flying rather than driving to the outfitter. Winter 2021/2022 came and went and the outfitter contacted me a couple times to start looking at flights however the snow fall didn't come to fruition and the plan was that the hunt would happen this winter.
I contacted the outfitter a couple weeks ago and asked if he was tracking a snow storm for his part of Wyoming that I'd seen on a weather app and he said he hadn't but would look into it and this may be the storm we were waiting for. Couple days later I get a call from the outfitter and he says they're calling for a good amount of snow so this might turn out pretty good but as with past storms,no guarantee that we truly get the snow they are predicting. I decide it's now or never and book the flight and fly to Casper, WY. On my way there, outfitter texts me and says roads are too bad tonight to pick you up so grab a motel and I'll pick you up in the morning. Frustrating but happy that the storm is actually happening and we'll have great conditions for the lion hunt.
Outfitter picks me up at the motel next morning and says conditions are great. There will be about a foot of snow on the ground when this is done tomorrow morning and you'll probably kill your lion on Thursday (this was said on Tuesday). We drive north to where outfitter lives. Outfitter offers me to stay in the spare bedroom of his house rather than at the little motel room. Outfitter says he doesn't normally let hunters stay at his house with his family but I seemed like a good guy so the option was for me to choose. I chose to stay in the house rather than a motel room. When we get to the house, outfitter says he will apologize in advance that the house smells like a rotten mouse that is in the house somewhere but he'll find it and take care of it. Wasn't a major deal but he never did try to resolve the rotting mouse situation aside from having his wife light some candles.
Getting to the important part now. We hunted 5.5 days in what the outfitter said where perfect conditions and only cut 2 sets of several day old lion tracks. The outfitter day in and day out would say we were going to go do one thing and then do something different almost always related to the fact that equipment/transportation he'd plan to use wouldn't run or was broken. His side by side he had tracks for, he waited until day 3 of the hunt to call the hunt that day short to travel back to the house to put the tracks on the side by side..... correction...one of his other houndsmen guides and I put the tracks on while he took pictures for Snapchat. Same thing happened the next day when he had to use the old little bronco to hunt from because the side by side wouldn't run properly. We blew a tire on the bronco up in the mountains. He had no jack in the vehicle but fortunately he had a spare tire so we found a log and rock to run it up on and once again I had to change the tire while he took Snapchat videos. He admitted that he doesn't take care of his equipment and he loaned some of his good dogs to his brother to go lion hunting with. He admitted that he needs to spend more time with his pups because after letting his brother take 2 of his good dogs he only had 1dog that could run more than 1day. He also wanted to turn the dogs out on every damn bobcat track even though that was not what we were after. He spent approximately half the time the last 3 days on the phone talking with his fellow colleagues from the local college as he is a rodeo coach trying to figure out how to get students eligible through loopholes due to failing grades etc.....
The point of all this is that I spent a lot of money to go on this on-call lion hunt and the outfitter was ill prepared and his priority was not helping a paying hunter but worrying about 5 other things. The number of lies I heard by this outfitter in one week was unreal. I don't think a good hunt is measured by a kill but rather by the experience. In this situation the experience was an expensive learning situation. I could go on with more examples but I think I've presented a good picture of the situation.
If you want to know the name of the outfit send me a message and Ill be glad to provide that and save you money and alot of frustration.
Merry Christmas outdoorsmen and women

Thanks for the story and reminder about one of the many perils of guided hunts.

What a bummer and this is exactly why I cannot bring myself to pay a guide, outfitter, etc. for a hunt.

I can't bring myself to spend gobs o' cash without some sort of guarantee, or at least, a partial refund if not successful.

Hell, I can be unsuccessful on my own and spend a fraction on what a guided hunt costs.

There are certain circumstances where it might make sense to spend that kind of money, but they are few and far between in my book.

That would be super frustrating. I think it's good that people share their experiences with outfitters and put their names on it. It's hard to find info on these guys sometimes and I think there are far too many of them out there that shouldn't be for us to "protect" their names

Just curious why not post the outfitter publicly might help save someone else from being in the same situation down the road. I’m sure you would have had second thoughts about booking with him if you had read a post like yours about said outfitter.

Agree, will never understand why people post horror stories and don't name the outfit. Lots of guys like you and me might be out there "googling" the outfitter name looking for feedback whether they should book or not. You could save someone a lot of trouble.

I was going to post something about being another newbie coming on to trash an outfitter. But it looks like you've been here for a little bit. Just not posted a bunch.

The equipment thing is a real bummer. That's where reading along I decided you maybe had a cause to be upset. So many of these you read into it and it's just a case of someone not shooting a world beater and wanting to exaggerate.

The reason he probably wanted to turn his dogs lose on bobcats was to get them experience. Running and treeing a bobcat is about 10x tougher than treeing a lion. And having a idle dog doesn’t help when you find a fresh lion track. Finding two lion tracks in 5.5 days seems about average, but I’m a poor houndsmen…. Did he attempt to have his dogs tree the lions you found tracks, or did the dogs mess it up? Sorry for the bad experience.

He turned the dogs out on the last 2nd lion track we found and the dogs ran it for about 500 yrds and lost it in a wind blown meadow. We put the dogs back in the box, drove down and back up another trail on the mountain and found the track again. He didn't turn the dogs out again and spent time ton the phone talking to his rodeo coach colleagues about how to get some of his college rodeo students eligible for the next season

The facts….. he told you to book a flight & coaxed you with snow on the way. You booked the flight & showed up with $ in hand. Story you told is funny as hell because we all know those types of people. Seemed like story was gonna lead up to perfect kill but yorur title spoiled the possibility of a successful outcome. I feel your pain brother…..I would contact him about 1/2 reimbursement or possible discount hunt in the future Before you post his credentials on this forum. Its tough out there right now for everyone, especially our outfitters. Sometimes there’s not enough cash to fix what’s broke but sometimes being an honest individual could earn you an invite back for a second chance at a Lion….., cause they don’t come easy

Also: extremely unprofessional to talk on the phone while your client is sitting next to paying for an opportunity….but these Houndsman are a different breed of character & it’s possible he didn’t communicate that releasing hounds on 2nd track wasn’t feasible due to conditions

I can assure you, I've already discussed the outcome, my frustrations and any resolution with him. Fact of the matter is this outfitter is a pathological liar and I'm quickly learning that my experience is not unique. My neighbor who gave me the recommendation is a very well traveled outdoorsman and it appears he just got super lucky on his hunt with this outfitter. I'm not even mad about not punching a tag. It's the experience and unwillingness to make my time there a priority. Instead his modes of transportation were either barely running or broken, the dogs he didn't loan out needed work except for 1, the house was a disaster and smelled like a rotten animal and the food was absolutely ******* garbage

What an eye opening thread. After it all, I have to ask: what was your out of pocket costs for this hawt mess of a guided hunt?

No harm, no foul if you'd rather not say and a dollar range spent is good with me. (y)
