I'm setting up my pelican case for travel. I loaded for my 7 mag and 308. Will probably bring both rifles. And 2 boxes of ammo each. I'm considering the 20 round MTM cases to store the ammo. My 7 mag rounds are longer than sammi spec by a good bit.

What case do you guys recommend so my bullets don't slosh around and hit the tips? I'd like to find one where they store bullet tips down so it doesn't hit, but I can't find one. I could also get a larger case, say for 300wm or some other and stick some foam in the lid to keep them from rattling around.

I ended up ordering some MTM J-20 LLD cases. They are listed at a length of 3.84" OAL. At $2.99 each, if they don't work, I'll just use them a simple storage. But after looking online, I'm gonna install some soft foam in the lid. Should help with them moving around. Plus, I could also use them for my longer 308 rounds. Just double up the foam in the lid. Well see, just trying to get this laid out before I start cutting. My handloads don't quite fit in the Hornady box, but at least it gave me a reference. When they come in, I'm going to try and fit the 4 MTM cases so I'' have 2 boxes of each.

If you use slip top boxes put a rubber band and round them. You could cut out a thin piece of foam and put in the top the boxes as well
That is exactly what I'm gonna try and do. Never flown with reloads so i guess my fear is the banging around would allow the tip of the bullets to constantly hit, thus there would be a possibility of a COAL / CTBO change. But maybe I'm just being anal. DK.

Yes foam in the lid as you've already figured out is the trick with ammo boxes.

I came into the thread thinking this was about 50rnd ammo boxes and I was gonna say I like the berrys better than the MTM (straighter walls and they store better in my opinion)

For what its worth I don't do fancy cutouts like that. For normal truck use I just put in guns without the middle foam layer, for flights I pack the case with other gear to utilize the 50lb weight allowance.

I’ve tried every compact ammo box and ammo wallet I could find, and my main complaint is the cartridges weren’t in a container that could be placed in a pack - it seemed silly to always take the cartridges out of what they were stored in, or to pack around a relatively heavy and poor fitting MTM box. I grew tired of smoked gray boxes falling over and dumping out, so they were all given away.

Now I’ll simply vacuum bag, or put in heavy ziplock and suck the air out, or wrap a single layer of electrical tape around groups of 3 cartridges and toss these triplets in a ziplock. I know that feeling of looking for a sharp looking plastic gizmo that would be perfect, but regular old cardboard boxes or plastic bags is where the search led me back to.

I was reading the regs on flying with ammo, one sentence says factory box only and right below it says metal, plastc ,fiber designed to carry ammunition? I think it is worth a call to the airline your flying to clarify before you get there. JMHO.

You can fly with ammo in ammo boxes like MTM, etc. The ammo just needs to be in a container intended for ammo basically.

They all work, I dont love the slip top ones because they have resulted in most messes.

Yeah from what I've been told, the case that are mentioned above by others are legit, one said it had to be labeled, 308, 7mag, etc and the box taped shut. But who the hell knows. As I get closer to trip, I'll get the print out.

Can't speak to the larger caliber boxes but something to keep in mind is the Berry's .223 size boxes (which I also like) don't fit .223 rounds with a COAL over magazine length 2.260" ish. Had to buy some MTM cases for my 75eldm loads.
