Rare for Oregon. Past couple years it’s been very common to have close interactions. Been a few cruising by schools lately, last month a guy shot 2 in his front yard. Some crazy lady had one in her house.
Direct result of banning running dogs for them.
More people will get eaten. Maybe that will get these liberals in this state incentive to allow dogs back in the hunt b

It still is rare... there's been less than 5 attacks in the last hundred years.

What are you basing this on?
I recall 2 attacks in the past several years here in Ca alone, I think there was at least one more attack here in Ca, but time has faded my memory. I recall at least one in Wa several years back. These are just the ones in well under the last 15 years. Granted, here in Ca, the big cats have been protected, so they haven't been hunted in several years, so encounters has risen significantly; one was even found in the middle of the city.

My guess is that we are discussing 2 different things without distinguishing between deaths and attacks.

I think he’s referring to Oregon, in the article it says it’s the first recorded death in the states history and there have been a few claims of attacks in the past but none of them have ever been proven it’s the first recorded and proven attack/death in the history of their state....

Mountain biker died in Washington state just this year. There was a report of an attack on archery opener here in Utah also thankfully no one was seriously hurt

I meant to say fatal attacks in the state, you are correct!

This got me curious. Of course, wikipedia is not an authoritative source but it's usually in the ballpark. Many more than 5 *fatal* attacks in the past 100 years. This, of course, doesn't account for non-fatal attacks and close calls; I'm sure no source can accurately record those.

Being eaten by a mountain lion is still waaaay down on the list of things that are likely to cause trouble in the backcountry...but as far as animals go, they are one that will attack humans.

Some sponsor over on archery talk was charged by a lion a couple weeks ago. He shot it in the face using his special super quick rest arrow nocking sighting device. I think some other members hired the lion as a hitter.

Just go read the comments section on one of the many articles and you’ll quickly realize we’re not getting dogs back. The level of stupid in Portland is at an all time high. They pretty much blame the hiker.

Jim Shockey also just put up a video this year of him getting attacked by a lion. He put it down though with a quick shot.

I had, what I would consider, a close call last year while hiking back to the trailhead. We decided to break camp one night well after dark to move to a new area. Throughout the 3.5 mile hike out, I kept catching a glimpse of eyes in the trees. About a quarter mile from the truck we heard the unmistakable growl of a lion. We kept on hiking on full alert, and about 300 yards from the trucks I saw the eyes again. This time they were only 20 yards from the trail coming from a little patch of brush. I turned my headlamp on high and could see the lion plain as day. We tried acting "big" to scare it off, but that didn't seem to have any impact on the cat. I fired a warning shot into the brush in front of the lion, and it didn't even flinch. Finally, after another few minutes of sizing us up, he slowly turned and walked back into the trees.

Definitely had a little pucker factor with that one. I'm always a little nervous walking in/out in the dark, and this encounter certainly didn't help ease my concerns.

Ok

But the last couple of years attacks have increased.

Population control has been altered by left leaning anti hunters who are making hunting laws.

Maybe im in the wrong but I would have shot that damn thing. Middle of the night especially. I'll call the game warden out and take my chances.

The thought did cross my mind, but I didn't want to run the risk of just pissing it off. My brother-in-law had a similar run in with a cat in AZ a while back. He shot it in the head with a .45 from about 15 yards, and it still had enough energy to run 60 feet up a tree before it dying.
