MR Metcalfe

I got more time in it as well, tough as nails per usual from Mystery Ranch.

Had to get out quick, whole deer bone in and cape/antlers.

Quick question on Guns and Canada. Do they let you hunt with them there? Or is it just handguns that are illegal? Ive always wondered that. By the way the metcalf looks amazing. I am very fond of the Mystery Ranch daypack lid. Thats a pretty versatile piece of gear. Thinking about scoring one for my MMR just to have the option.

We have lots of stupid firearms laws up here, but do have lots of options for hunting. Just OAL restrictions for most CF long arms w/ capacity restrictions on semis. We have are 'allowed' handguns and AR type firearms, but they fall into a 'restricted' category that basically limits their use to certified ranges. Strangely enough, we can owned many semi-auto rifles, that are roughly equivalent, like the RA XCR, that fall under 'non-restricted' and can be used for hunting. Lots of epic stupidity went into the making of our firearms laws...

Thanks for clearing that up for me WS. Ive always been curious. I dont know how the folks in the UK deal with it. I cant imagine not being able to excersise your god given right to feed yourself by any means neccessary.

Heck, I'll just re-post a couple of pics...

Okay, I can't take it anymore. I see you and Aron packing this huge mats...what's the story on those? There are so many 1lb options that are the size of a soda can...WTF?

For that hike pictured, it was in high desert in AZ. I have a small lightweight pad (see below), but wasn't wanting to chance ruining it on that hike. Will use the ridge rest pad on shorter hikes in desert terrain.

On my CO hunt this September I used the inflatable as it is more comfortable and fits inside the pack...

I'm really enjoying the Metcalf this season. Have used it for multi day trips and day trips.

Here is a picture of me helping to haul out meat from my buddy's bull. My gear, his gear (pack, since he was hauling head and cape on a frame), and a bag of meat inside the pack.

I'm 6'3" I bought the metcalf when it came out this year. I love it ! Been backpacking and packed out 2 of my bucks and 2 of my hunting partners bucks so far this year. My dad ordered one after and he is loving his too ! Went from a badlands 2200 to a metcalf. Glad I did !

Always had this question to ask.... would the Metcalf play nice with a kifaru duplex frame?

Would there be a issue with getting that pack on the frame?

Asking because the NICE frame just doesn't do it for me.

Nope, lots of sewing. Maybe Kifaru will offer a side zip Highcamp soon....

Crap... considering that the longbow fits, I had high hopes that perhaps this one will as well.

Don't mind me asking, but what exactly is the constraint putting one of these on a duplex frame??

I've ran the MR Longbow and Metcalf and while I never attempted to mount them on a duplex frame, the Metcalf has load lifters built into the pack where as the long bow does not. Believe this would be your biggest culprit.

Here is my Metcalf packing out my 2013 AZ coues deer. Even though the Metcalf has load lifters, I was using the 'aftermarket' Oneiros Valley LLP (load lifter panel) with my nice frame and Metcalf pack. Gear and whole deer is in the pack. The optional llp gives more 'lift' than the built in load lifters on the Metcalf.

I've never played with a duplex frame, but the attachment of the Metcalf is the same as the longbow on the nice frame.

You would have close to a 29 inch frame. I will take some pictures and post it here.

Does the bag attach to the lifters? How do they transfer weight to the frame?

That looks painful Sreeker

It was. I walked down the trail saying our heavy pack motto "I hate life right now, I hate life right now..." Was absolutely worth it and I will be scouting them again in the high country as soon as possible.

I'm interested in this as well. If the Oneiros or MR version work as advertised, it could potentially salvage my Metcalf/Nice frame.

My concern is that the bag doesn't really look the weight is going to the top at all. The weight has to come from the stays and effectively be transferred to the lower back and hips for it to work. If there is a science that I don't understand about the load lifters I am all ears, but every other bag I now sits on top of the lifters with weight running ALL the way from the top.

That is my concern as well. Looking at pictures of the Oneiros version, I don't see how it can provide lift. Looking at pictures of MR's, it has female buckles off both sides. It appears that the Metcalf can be attached and appropriate lift provided. I took a quick look at my Metcalf before I headed off work and it looks like I would need to use two of MR's accessory straps to connect the extension to the pack. I'm going to give MR a call on Friday and discuss this as an option. I'm also curious if the NICE day pack lid can still be used. If for some reason it can't, then I probably won't bother with the extensions and start looking at either a Kifaru or Paradox.
