Moving to Washington from Colorado? Help...

Which taxes are these?
We have a long term care tax, currently have just over 1/2 percent but it has no limits on them increasing it. The other is a Paid Family Medical Leave tax, just under 1 percent but part of that is paid by the employer.

That doesn’t include the carbon credit tax. We charge companies for how much carbon they produce over a certain threshold. That gets directly pushed to us but not directly linked to income.

I live in Montrose Colorado on the Western Slope. Been here four years, wife is ready for change (a move) and we’re considering Washington. We need to be closer to an international airport and WA would put us closer to family in ID.

What we enjoy about WA: topography, climate, coast, rain and fishing. What we don’t enjoy is mostly politics, gun laws and home prices, and Colorado is slowly catching WA on those three fronts.

Living in the stretch between Seattle and Vancouver would give us access to two options for international flights (gotta be able to see parents/family in Europe) but undoubtedly has some drawbacks, maybe some significant ones that we’re not considering.

Hoping some of you could possibly weigh in on those drawbacks. What’s bad and getting worse there? What’s bad but getting better? Any help/advice appreciated!
The fishing opportunities in Washington are going to be a bonus, but the weather can really weigh on folks. The politics of the i5 corridor and most of Washington in general is a brutal negative. Good luck deciding and welcome to the pac nw

I live in Western WA and if I had a full remote job, I'd move further West, specifically on the peninsula.

Squim has approximately the same annual precipitation as LA -- Rainshadow micro climate is real -- and is a very cute small town. Port Townsend has very sunny weather too and is quite likely the prettiest town on the west coast (if you like old redbricks). Phenomenal food -- a million small farmers markets serving produce you won't get better than maybe in some parts of California, oyster farms or just forage your own, salmon everywhere, ... -- surprisingly good and diverse restaurant scene up there too, only approx 1% income tax (WA cares, the biggest grift tax ever invented, and paid family leave which is nice to support), reasonable house prices, and when you want to see the big city, it's not impossible far and airport is also reachable.

Been here four years, love it, my dream location (not hers), but getting in and out thru MTJ is expensive and options are limited. It's getting better, but she's ready for change, and you all know what that means. I like the dry air too, but damn we could use some rain.
The flights are more expensive here but you have to love the short TSA line and the fact the short drive to the airport.

I'd recommend staying out of the major cities along the I-5 corridor. If you go north more you're close to Vancouver BC and the airport there. Or move into eastern Washington/idaho and fly out of Spokane.

Lots of rain, too much probably, but it is beautiful, lush, and green because of it. Different strokes. You will find good stuff out there if you end up going.

Just be aware that Port Townsend is one of the most far left, liberal towns on the planet. The worst I know of in Western WA.

Interesting read. Hard pass for me. All that green hurts my eyes. LOL

I am not sure how much it impacts ones everyday life there either way (I don't live there so don't know). But i do know that you should anticipate approximately one steampunk dress up convention a month there ... so avoid if you don't like people with funky hair and clothes.

I’m currently working near downtown Tacoma and drive near one of the “arts and other useless degrees” campuses frequently.

In the words of Coach from Letterkenny…

So I moved from Colorado to Spokane for a job 4 years ago. I left that job over a year and moved back to around home. Spocompton sucks. Drugs, homeless, politics were horrid. Fishing was good. Turkey hunting good. I struggled to hunt because of all the trees and lack of open space where I could hunt. My wife killed 2 deer in the 3 years we lived there and that was on private ground I never killed on. Here’s another thought on your international airport on the west side . You may live 20-30 miles from it but it’s going to take you 1.5 hours to get there. Go to Idaho. Cda, post falls, sandpoint, ect. Biggest thing I miss about up there is my old range. Man that’s was awesome.
