Looking for opinions on which is better and why. Mountainsmith is cheaper especially on sale but is the sl2 superior and if so enough to make it worth the extra dough?

Pretty slow around here on the weekends usually, give it a few days.

I've been using the Mountainsmith and really like it, but I have zero experience with the SL2 to make any comparison.

Same here. Of the two, I only have experience with the mountainsmith. I think it's going to work really well, and the quality is excellent, for the price.

Just got a new Mountainsmith and sent it to Bearpaw Wilderness Designs for a stove jack install. Got it back tonight and looks like John did great work.
I have a stove on the way from Ed T. and feel like I'll be well prepared for whatever an early season mountain hunt may throw at me.

I went with the Mountainsmith because of the post I had seen here about it, and it was less $$. I tried to pick up the SL2 that was in the classified, but had no luck.

I have owned both. I sold the SL2 simply because I did not like the door configuration. The door zips all started in the one corner and was awkward with two in the tarp. With the LT it is in the center and easier to use. It was a small problem to me, and I'm sure not a problem for others. Other than that they are very close in all other aspects. You do get a little more head room with the A-frame style (full height) of the SL2 in the rear, but a better "weather" shape with the LT and it's lower rear.
For the money you can't beat the LT, I don't think the cost increase is worth it for the SL2.

I'd go w/ the LT for a first solo shelter, then invest the saving in the SL3 or SL5 as a second shelter for 2-3 guys down the road. It's really hard to beat the LT for price, size & weight for entry level. But the SL3 split between two guys is an excellent option as well. Heck even the fly of the SL5 weighs only 2-3lbs and you don't have to always take/use the nest.

What did it cost for the stove jack install, if you don't mind me asking?

Sent him an email about having a stove jack installed and perimeter netting added to an LT...$55 for the stove jack, $50 for the perimeter netting.

Now I just need to decide if I want to do that, or just get a Minimalist 1 from him to use inside the LT and skip the stove jack for now. Decisions, decisions. OR, I could get a Luna 2 with netting for about $15 more. Gah, too many options and not enough money to try them all out.

No kidding I've been grappling back and forth for a year now on which way to go. At the moment another thread on here has me inspired to sew my own megatarp, with the hopes that it will serve my purposes and give me the confidence to make whatever modifications are necessary to make it more comfortable.
