Mountain Vehicle Toyota or Jeep

Both great mountain vehicles, but I will take a Yota any day. Any vehicle will break with too much skinny pedal in the wrong situation. I've had a pickup, two 4runners and a Tacoma. Actually think the 4runners are better all around mountain vehicles than the Tacoma. They have good interior space and are more nimble off road due to the shorter wheelbase. Can wheel with a similarly equipped jeep all day long and then drive across the country comfortably. Here are a couple shots from a trip up Mt Antero a few years back. I had to take the lead in my Tacoma, when my buddies Jeep couldn't make it through a snow drift on a steep slope. We were the first vehicles up Antero that summer...

I love the looks of the 4 door Wranglers with a lift under them, almost bought one recently but talked myself out of it because you can't haul anything with them....So I bought a new Tundra CrewMax instead. I was always a Chevy guy when it came to full size trucks but I LOVE my Tundra, thing has a ton of power, ton of room, rides good and looks good.

|It is true you can't haul to much with them. But Ive been towing my 18ft boat that is 2400lbs roughly with mine once a week and it handles it just fine. And i'm hoping to be hauling 2 moose home this year with it as well. Compared to a full size truck its not the same, but it actually tows fairly well for what its rated for

You would be surprised (I sure was) - a buddy's '07 Tundra pulled a loaded 7 horse goose neck over many a pass faster than you wanted to go and all he did was add air bags. He averaged the same speeds he does now with a built Cummins. Now the mileage did leave something to be desired.

My old 87' (4 cyl fuel injected.) I use most of the time for trips, scouting, etc. It's been a great little pickup but thinking of adding a 96' or 97' 4 cyl Tacoma with a locking shell and a little more room/comfort. I will probably just keep this little pickup since it only set me back 2K and is easy to keep up. The bed is rusted out pretty bad but most from this decade are due to the bed seams. However, little "Marty" Has done a good job thus far.

I was referring to the Jeep Unlimited not being able to haul much....Hell the Tundra pulled the space shuttle, lol...

88 I put a Supercharged 3.4 Tacoma motor in it. Now its time for the straight axle with air lockers. Just don't use it that much.

99 Tacoma. 2.7 with 529's locked up. For what we use it for it does just fine.

Due to my recent vehicle issues, I was curious what vehicle you guys prefer....or would choose if you could?

I've owned a both Toyota and jeep, and they both have pros and cons!

Anyway, I've already made my decision, but would like to hear what you prefer, and why.

Yo Aron - Jeep Gladiator FTW? Breakover angle and wheelbase not great. Other than those compromises better than both a Taco or Wrangler for hunters like us IMHO.

Old thread!

The gladiator has my attention, but only to a limited degree. I have a 2018 Tacoma with the manual and added an ARB rear locker, sliders, etc... the biggest advantage to the gladiator is that it would have slightly better depart/approach angles and could fit 35's with little to no work. The gladiator is offering a fair bit more rear leg room for gear.

With that said, I've heard horror stories on that newer pentastar motor. Any experiences?

I'll probably be buried in my Jeep, I love it. And it's a real jeep LOL. Meaning it leaks and is loud and doesn't have air, etc.... But all joking aside there are probably more reasons to not own a jeep than there are to own a jeep. From a purely functional aspect I'd probably go with a Toyota pick up.

I love my 2002 tacoma 4 door with rear locker. I got 140,000 miles. It's not my daily driver and I put about 5,000 miles a year on it. I plan on driving it another 50,000 or 10 or so years.

I'm not a jeep guy, probably will never own one. However, they are the most customizable of any 4x4 with more aftermarket parts and accessories and more popular than any other 4x4 vehicle, period!

I've got both.

2015 Tacoma TRD Pro with a supercharger
2014 Jeep Rubicon with an AEV suspension

The Jeep is far more comfortable to drive in rough terrain.

Wonder how the mileage will be on the Gladiator v6 6 speed. I’m in the market for either the TRD pro 6 speed or maybe that Jeep. Don’t know yet and I have plenty of time to decide.

I get like 15-17 in my Jeep - I'd expect the Gladiator would be similar with the 3.6 Pentastar - not sure what the 3.0 EcoDiesel will get. If I was shopping for another Tacoma I wouldn't do the TRD Pro. Instead, buy a more base model and go aftermarket with a lift, suspension, and air lockers.

I went Toyota. Both hold value well and both amazing off road. Jeep probably a little better but lacks storage and you can’t sleep in the back of a Jeep.

I like the nicer interior of the TRD PRO and those Fox shocks are pretty bad ass also. I drove a PRO and a Off Road last week and i could tell that the PRO sat up higher. I like the factory TRD wheels a lot also. Basically i would be buying off the lot everything i would do to the truck to make it off road worthy.
