elkyinzer: I've had much the same experiences with how the MH comes out. Sadly, that's the most memorable part of the trip for some of my friends. Not in a good way.

I can normally eat nearly anything but after about three days of MH my digestive system would give up. Or protest, I'm not really sure what it did but it was bad.

I mentioned it to my dad (a nonhunter and microbiologist) and he explained that my digestive system wasn't prepared for a straight diet of freeze-dried food. So I added some MH gradually into my diet before the next trip. First, a meal a week for a couple of weeks, and then a couple of meals in the week before the trip. It worked!

For the last couple of years this has worked a LOT better for me. It might work for you. Everybody is different.

Also, freeze-dried (MH) is different than homemade or Heather's Choice because they are dehydrated. Maybe your system just can't handle freeze-dried but would be fine with dehydrated.

So, gritty bowmen have published some kind of a informal study podcast on the "outcome" of eating these meals. That is bound to be too funny.

Save a MH or BP bag from some of the ones I do like. Dehydrate my own veggies or buy dried, lean meat drying in smoker, add Ichiban/Ramen or Couscous. You just have to experiment a little at home so get the 'recipe' down. I do it at home in the event of 'massive failure'.

Whoever recommended Heathers Choice, have you actually ordered it and tried it? Had the blueberry breakfast buckwheat and Moms Pasghetti on my last trip. I understand the ingredients are good and they are better for you than mountain house but they did not taste good. Pretty much forced myself to finish the buckwheat breakfast. The Pasghetti was edible but not enjoyable. Makes me hesitant to try the rest of the sampler box ordered.

I can't stand Mountain House any more. Working more and more on dehydrating my own stuff but Hawk Vittles Southwest Lasagna is so tasty I can't not see having a few bags of that along on every single trip.

I think the question to you would be have you tried those types of foods before and enjoyed them? I haven't tried their stuff but looking at their ingredients the Pasghetti looks like its squash based so that is going to be a different taste/texture than noodles if that is what you were hoping for. In a world where some folks dislike avocado (crazy talk! ;) ) but love high sodium instant ramen noodles there are going to be a difference of flavors one enjoys (not talking about you personally, I have no idea what you like).

Most commercial stuff in general is over salted/sugared for my taste but others apparently enjoy that. Take the sweet potato breakfast I posted in its own thread, someone suggested adding marshmallows to it where as I find it has enough sweetness as is.

Long story short I get the impression the heathers choice is stepping away from the traditional wheat/noodle based meals (some folks don't like to eat much refined grain) and offering some different ingredient combinations, which inherently won't appeal to all. Taste test ahead of time is the best bet, I do that with the stuff I dehydrate to make sure it comes out the way I wanted.

I have eaten that stuff before. My old lady is into squash noodles, or she'll make zucchini noodles with some kitchen product she bought a while back, (I think its called the "Vegetti" or something like that). So it's not new to me. I definitely agree with you that the best bet is to taste test whatever you plan on bringing with you ahead of time, especially if its a longer trip. Everybodys palate is different. I guess I came into it with too high of an expectation due to the higher price point and the high recommendations by a couple of the podcasters I listen to. I had 4 other guys with me on this trip and it was pretty much agreed upon across the board that the buckwheat breakfast was terrible. 1 out of us 5 liked the moms pasghetti, 1 thought it was okay, 3 thought it was terrible or had a burnt taste/wierd texture.

I'm definitely interested in dehydrating my own meals in the future. I think thats the way to go if you have the time. Definitely not the most convenient though.

Right on, solid feedback.

Not everything dehydrates well but it works for me as long as its not a last minute trip. Mine was running all weekend long (still running actually) as I'm preparing 5-6days of breakfast & dinner for two guys. Breakfast is the sweet potato & nut butter each day, for 5days I don't think I'll burn out on it. Dinner is 1) chili 2) beef, rice, peppers, pasta sauce 3) beef, rice, peppers & onions, beans, tacospice. Then just repeating them. I didn't have time to play around with dried chicken and curries, etc. for this trip. The chili, beef, peppers, potato trial runs all rehydrated reasonably so I went with those in my combinations.

Same experience, I tried it but I just can't dig the taste.

I tried MH for the first time last week, the results were not good, I kept thinking I was in Yellowstone next to the bubbling mud pits that smelled of sulfur, I won't try that again

I like the Heathers Choice meals, but have found that they don't appeal to everyone. Some of this may have with how you are used to eating. They are intentionally high in fat, so if you aren't used to a diet of high fat/ grain free, then they may not suit your palate at all. I've read that a lot of people can't get past the beef gelatin in the breakfast meals. It tastes fine to me, in fact I really like the breakfast meals. The HC meals are certainly closer to the types of meals that I eat at home than any of the MH offerings.

I loved the dark chocolate chili. Didn't like the pasghetti or the strawberry buckwheat (too tangy). The cherry chipotle cherry was good.

Yes. I do not eat the buckwheat breakfasts. they give me heartburn for about an hour. The salmon chowder is pretty good IF you like crunchy smoked salmon. The chili is good. I have not eaten the pasghetti yet.

I prefer to make my own meals, so I use these as backups to my backups.
