I just finished this book. I was pleasantly surprised by how good of a read it was. If you're into hunting the wilderness, horse wrecks, and grizzly bear encounters. You will like it.
Some other great reads include 7003 Days, by Jim and Holly Akenson about living in the Frank Church managing Taylor Ranch.
Silvertip, about traditional archer Paul Shafer with some horse packing in there.
I just ordered the new Smoke Elsner book about the Bob Marshall Wilderness.
It's not for entertainment, but for myself who's had horses but just getting into hunting with them, I found The Hunting Horseman very helpful !
It's a collection of George's articles in Western Hunter magazine about hunting on horseback.
He makes it very clear that for purely learning about packing, Smoke's book and others are better, but those don't always address the situations we face when hunting. Very nice guy and has an unbelievably long, successful life of hunting (something like 80 elk).
