Motorcycle Hunting

Howdy. I was at the gas station the other day and saw a guy with an old Rokon in his truck. I asked him what he used it for, and he said that he used it for elk hunting access for many years (it looked like it). I know quads are huge, but wondered how many used a motorcycle? Any 2 wheeled hunters out there?
Rokon, That's a blast from the past.

I ride with my rifle in my Kifaru sling on the nastiest, single-track trails Idaho has to offer. I'd rather ride technical trails without a rifle at all,...but the Kifaru isn't too much of a concession when hunting. A rifle strapped to a bike is soon to be damaged in my experience. Our first instinct when crashing (inevitable at some point on a bike) is to protect ourselves...which I why I want the rifle attached to me.

For all of you considering a TW200...I'd respectfully suggest looking at a CRF230 or the newer CRF250F as an alternative. They are MUCH more capable trail bikes, and much lighter than the piggy TWs. Seat height difference is negligible as well, which is what most of you are drawn to with the TW.

Dave

TWs are great for riding down unimproved, two-track roads if that's what you're looking for. If you want to ride designated single-track USFS trails though, it's not even close...the CRF is a MUCH better choice.
Just going back and reading through this thread; i had a small UTV in ID in '22 and a TW200 in '23. The TW lacked the HP's in my opinion. Probably could have regeared and gained a little bit but i sold it (for a profit) when i got home.

This year I have been looking at KLX250-300's or the CRF equivalent. My budget is ~$3k, so the CRF's are typically out of my budget but a '19 KLX (1st year they went to efi) is getting close. I'm hoping in August folks will be like, "I don't want to store this through the winter" and find a steal. Also wanting to use it for commuting to/from work, so it would need to be a dual sport. Is there anything else i should be considering?

I’d have an idea of what kind of (if any) rack setup you want. I bought my ktm used from a guy that installed a tusk rear rack. Super helpful for securing anything somewhat permanently that isn’t already on my pack. Maybe sleeping gear or food, just don’t use it as a rifle rack.

KLX 300s are also good bikes, if a little taller than the CRF/TTRs I recommended previously. Better clearance, but unless you're a pretty good rider you'll struggle a bit more unless you're pretty long-legged.

I ride a first gen KLX 300 fwtw.

you talkin the 90's era klx300 or this new era of them

90s era my man. I believe its a 2001 to be exact. The rear sprocket is bigger than a tractor tire and i've done a bunch to pull weight off of it. It's stupid light and easy to ride the technical stuff with.

This thread is 3 years old now, and every time it pops up, this is all I can think of.

I parked my '13 300xcw for about a year while I screwed off on a 150. Hopped back on the 300 and all day I was just in awe at how used up that bike was. :ROFLMAO: Never rode it again
