Most successful guides in Nevada

I've been on several mostly archery elk hunts, some rifle and one muzzy for elk in the last 35 plus years and had great fun, but no success on a mature bull. I have not gone elk hunting in 10 years, since my son was born. Now my kids are older and my wife's job is more stable, so I can commit to my bucket big game hunts I've been building points for decades!!!!

I'm probably going to draw early season, rifle Wastach in Utah next year. I'd like to get an over 290 bull. If I hire a good guide there and do my part it should happen. I don't want to fool around and pass on bulls hoping for a really huge one, just a real big 5x5 or 6x6 and get it done even if it's the first half hour of the hunt!!

I've got 18 points in Nevada and assuming I get a 290 or better elk in Utah, I'd like to do better in Nevada. With this in mind, I'm thinking of holding out for a 330 plus, if I already have a 290 or 300.

I'm 56 in a week and in good physical shape. Who are the most successful guides in Nevada for getting a plus 330 bull? I'm not a millionaire as far as having that much "liquid" assets, and I absolutely abhor being overly pampered. I got all my hunting and camping stuff and would prefer to pay a single guide and or scouts to guide me to the elk and help pack it out. I would suppose the best guides probably have real comfy camps with all the fixings and that's not a show stopper either. My full focus would be on killing a big bull.

The other thing about me, is I am extremely analytical and ask LOTS of questions and talk a whole lot. I'm the worlds worst mind reader, ask my wife. I'm not the type to try and tell the guide where to go, but I love hunting and love to learn. I know most guides are quiet and stoic and my questions could be annoying, however, I am usually completely dialed in on my hunts as far as equipment, preparation, and clothing.

Thanks all,
Bill

For Nevada, Mogollon Rim Outfitters or Pine Peak Outfitters. I have not hunted with them since Nevada stubbornly refuses to give me a tag, but these two would be at the top of my list due to reputation and friends recommendations. That said, I'd call huntinfool and Global Hunting Resources before the draw and talk strategy and outfitters before you apply.

After you smoke a big bull in Utah, your mature bull itch should be scratched. Nevada is a once in a lifetime deal with the 7 year waiting period after the tag is drawn. I would go for broke there and set a best for the unit bar of something like 350 or better. Just my 2 cents on that, I also have no issues eating a tag.

Expect a wall tent or camp trailer along with decent food, but nothing beyond that. The guides are there to hunt not cook. I have never seen the value in going guided only since the savings are only in the neighborhood of $1500. Figure $5000-7000 all in for fully outfitted 7 day hunt.

All the guides that I have had on various hunts have loved talking hunting or whatever. There are probably some quiet ones, but I have yet to find one. The good ones know how to make a hunt fun whether you're on the game or not.

Their biggest two concerns are can you shoot and are you in shape. Cover those two, and you'll get along fine.

Good luck

Jeremy

+1 for Mogollon Rim Outfitters. Give the owner Greg Krogh a call, 775-962-1721. Based on what you mentioned your looking for in a hunt he would be a great choice.
