Agree, you definitely have to be “on” at close range regardless of load, some are just going to be a bit more forgiving.

That was first time shooting Apex & you ain’t lying. I’m not recoil sensitive but it’ll definitely punch you pretty good.

Have you patterned TSS with a cylinder choke?

It's a different beast from steel and lead, and the results might be interesting.

No I haven’t. I started with Jeb’s .660 because that’s what the fella I talked to from Jebs recommended for TSS. I’ve thought about putting it up against a factory full choke to see the difference. Just hard to keep blasting at paper with the price of tss

I did the exact same thing. I looked at the website for about 2 weeks contemplating on buying some. Went to make the purchase yesterday and no luck. The local Academy Sports had Federal for $94 for a box of 5, ill pass on that. I guess I will be sticking with Longbeard XR this year, they pattern pretty good out of my gun. This was 2 shots at 20, made a 1.5" adjustment to my red dot on the second shot.

Thats not bad at all! I decided to just run the Longbeard XR this season. However I did get ahold of Texas Ammunition from the link I posted. Several of their products showed in-stock, but unavailable. He went in and updated the quantities and availability and I was able to purchase 2 boxes of 410 TSS for my wife! Here's a screenshot of what it looked like. One quick call and it was fixed!

I won't deny that TSS is superior to lead. I bought ten .410 TSS shells! SIX BUCKS EACH!
Ten of them was $60 plus shipping! That may not be that much to you, but to some of us old retirees, it can make a difference!
THAT, to me, is outrageous.
IF I were "moneyed", I'd probably swap to all TSS. But I'm not.
Not everybody can afford a Rolls Royce and a hand fitted Purdey shotgun.

P.S. - the .410 ammo I bought is #9 TSS. I would love to have a box of three inch .410 ammo with #9 lead shot, but the hoarders snap it up as quickly as it hits the shelf!

I mean realistically how many turkeys do you shoot in a year? If it’s 1 bird a year that’s 10 years and if it’s two birds that’s 5 years. Run them in an o/u with lead for close range when you don’t need TSS and you can stretch it out even farther.

Even if you killed 2 birds a year for the next 20 years with TSS that is still only $240 in shells. With the price of gas and tolls it costs me roughly $150 each time I go hunt turkeys so the $8 it costs me to shoot TSS would save me the $150 having to go up a second weekend.

For anyone still looking for TSS I just ordered a couple boxes of 12ga Rogue 3” #7 from Dance’s Sporting Goods. Used a $20 off code & total came out to $63 after shipping. I also saw some Rogue 410 #9 for $43. I’ve heard really good things about Rogue so I’ll pattern it & see how it shoots.
So far I’ve patterned Federal, Hevi-18, & Apex with a Jeb’s headhunter (posted previously) so I’ll pattern these & share the results.

Also adding, I shot a huge Rio Monday morning with #9 tss (I’ll include pics because I’m proud of him). couldn’t get his head up and took the shot at half strut. Didn’t get a lot of shot in the breast but the shot that ended up in breast was extremely hard to find. Hoping a good shooting load of #7 would make it a bit easier to find those pellets that do end up in the breast.

I’m perfectly happy with the patterns at 40yds with Longbeard XR 6s. I’m getting very similar patterns with the 7/9 TSS load I found. At least this is with a Jebs head hunter .655 in 12ga.

I haven’t shot any 3” LBXR but my Jeb’s .660 did not like the LBXR 3.5” #5s I patterned at all. I also just read a study yesterday that showed lead 6s begin to lose the energy needed to kill efficiently at about 45 yards. I’ll attach the link to the very in depth study.

I have killed more than a handful of turkeys beyond 45 yards with long beard XR 6s and 4s. Every one bang flop. They kill just fine if you have the pattern. Out of my gun, Long Beard XR will kill turkeys beyond distances most people want to kill turkeys.

Shot TSS for a season just to see what it was all about. Kills great, but picking tiny pellets out of the top of a breast if the shot ain’t perfect is not fun. Ha.

Ive also witnessed lead do a fine job at 45+ yards. I’m just going off the seemingly very in depth study of guys shooting farm turkeys at 45 yards with 4s, 5s, & 6s and recording their findings. Which shows a decent percentage of birds able to run off after shooting them at that range with 6s

3.5” Uffda. I tried the 3” 5s and didn’t get the results I wanted that I got with the 6s. Granted that was with a .665” choke. Picked up the Jebs .655 and the 6s shot very well. Couldn’t find the LBXR 5s I had. They are somewhere. Hitting the woods tomorrow. 6s it is.

I ended up buying 4 boxes of the remington #9 tss for $26 a box off txammo.com! Got the wife a steven 301 .410 and on her first turkey hunt, she rolled a nice tom on public land!
