I've called the F & G office and left a message for the local warden for clarification, but no response. So what do I need to do to legally check in my moose assuming I'm fortunate enough to shoot one? I know it needs to be presented within 10 days, and I even got a letter explaining this, but it does not at all state exactly what I need to present to be legal. A moose doesn't come out of the field whole, so what part(s) do I need to take to the F&G office? The horns? The entire head? Quarter with proof of sex attached? I cant find anything on this.

Aha. Antlers. Thanks. The letter I got in the mail just said "Your harvested moose must be presented at an IDFG Regional Office or checked by a CO within 10 days after you take it". It didn't state which part of the moose.

They may have mailed you a bunch of stuff to take samples from your moose (blood, feces, snot, hide, etc). Those are helpful too, but not required. Just the head is needed to stay legal. Best of luck.

The whole head? Way I read it it’s just says antlers. I don’t want to pack out a whole moose head if a skull cap will qualify.

Sorry wasn't clear. Antlers yes. I meant to say that no meat is required to be checked in. I checked a boned out mountain goat in in CO and had to show them every cut and basically piece it back together.

In Idaho they will take a spread measurement and a tooth if possible. I gave them the skull of my daughter's last year without bottom jaw. I made a euro of it and they wanted the bottom jaw for a tooth but it was already gone. Wasn't a requirement.

I don't blame you. There is enough weight with the meat.

BTW, left two different phone messages, two different IDFG offices. Zero response.

Im glad I found this thread; I drew a unit 59 tag and received the same very generic letter. Luckily, I do already have the cell phone number for the game warden in my area and the neighboring area.
