Moose/Elk/Caribou/Brown Bear Custom Rifle

So what does everyone think about this setup? I like the idea of having two barrels for one gun. I'm a little concerned about the weight for hunting. Thoughts?

  • Best overall recommendation: Zermätt TL3 or SR3 action + TriggerTech Diamond + Proof CF prefit 280 AI (cerakote) + Zermätt Matterhorn.
  • Expected carry weight: about 10–11 lb bare, ~11–12.5 lb scoped, depending on exact barrel length and optic.
What is the weight breakdown of your bare rifle? I can’r help but think you could easily get it to 7.5lbs bare, 9-9.5lbs scoped.

My 280 AI weighs about 7.8lbs scoped with a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42

Don’t need the TriggerTech Diamond, Special is enough.

I’d stick with the Zermatt Original, but either TL3 or SR3 would be fine.

Proof barrels are good.

Have it chambered in 30-06, 300 Win, 300 WSM, or 300 PRC, since brown bear is on the menu.

Send it to Spartan Precision Rifles (SPR) for the smith-work and have him bed it in a Pure Precision Altitude Stock.

SPR did this one for me. Had it chambered in 280 AI, but I wish I had it chambered in .338-06 AI. If it was a one and done rifle, .30-06.

Mine weighs 7.7lbs bare with a 20" heavy shorter contour. With a scope and suppressor, it is probably 9.5 lbs(ish). But, I built that knowing I would be shooting from box blinds in Texas most of the time. It is also fun to practice with.

If I was a mountain hunter, I'd get a CF stock and a threaded barrel with the Tikka profile.

@WesternWisconsin should look hard at a CF stock or a light chassis like the Hunt26. A traditional chassis is just unnecessary for hunting. With the right barrel contour, he could closely replicate a Ruger Guide Gun for Brown Bear. He could used the same CF stock for a more traditional sized rifle.

Why don’t you feel like the 280 AI is enough? Mine has killed 5 big AK moose and I wouldnt hesitate to hunt brown bears with it.

The 280 AI is plenty. I have a 7mm-6.5 PRCW and a 7 PRC, so the 280 AI is redundant for me. I do plan on using the 280 AI for Mt. Goat. If I have a bear tag, I would feel confident in the 155 TA.

Remington style triggers are awful for reliability and safety. Not sure how or why the industry standardized there, but it's the gun equivalent of the Ford pinto. I can't imagine intentionally showing that for what I expect to be a high stakes situation.

I'm looking to invest in a good custom gun. Given the amount of money I know it will cost I want the best all-around cartridge I can find. I'm looking to have it custom-built or customized. I've been looking at customizing a Weatherby, or Seekins Precision, or Lane Precision. Curious if anyone has any feedback on any of these? Also, if you'd recommend one cartridge to fit my needs, what would it be?

I already have a .338 lapua but the ammo is expensive and I just sent the gun back for repairs today. I'm likely going to sell it when I get back as I've lost my trust in it. I wouldn't mind getting a .338 again, but I'm curious about other cartridges as I know there are a lot of new ones out there. Definitely not stuck on .338.
Consider a .375. Mine shoots easier than my .300 Win mag. Good up to 250 yards using 300 grain bullets. Plus you will have your rifle once you go to Africa. You can always get a hot rod gun for other animals but you mentioned brown bear and moose.
