Ok so my dad has recently moved up to Billings and told me I should come up in the fall and try a hunt cuz they have OTC tags. Was wondering what kind of info i could gather from here! He doesnt hunt anymore but likes to go with me, I only wanna do it if i can find somewhere close to his house. I dont want to drive up and then not spend anytime with the family. Im not really picky and would just like to get my first white tail so Im not after some trophy area. I dont have a treestand but have a ground blind and am fine to try spot and stalk.

I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about whitetail deer, montana, and the two combined has me hoping for a crayon colored explanation.

I would start by checking out the regs and figuring out which hunting districts you would be close to. Then look at an ownership map and see if there is any state, blm, or national forest land nearby. If there is, find a river bottom and find the thickest brush you can and set up your blind (with some view, and shooting lanes, obviously).

If no public ground, see if your dad can touch base with a few landowners....most agricultural operations wouldn't mind fewer deer around. And not "needing" a trophy hunt may be your ticket. Also, don't over look semi-urban areas. You can get away with archery whitetail hunting on pretty small tracts.

I can't offer anything specific to that area, however, because I live in NW MT....about 8 hours away.
