Funny, I had the same problem in Mid sept the last time I had a general tag, except it wasn't just challenges.I did wait till October last year in Montana. Saw a ton of elk but calling was very hard. You could locate them all day long with calls, but they weren't responsive to challenges. They took their cows and left. They were lovers, not fighters.
Gday folks. tried searching for info but didn't see exactly what i was after, so here we are. This spring my buddy and I applied to Colorado unit 77 and for a Montana general elk tag. We applied to both in hopes we would draw a tag somewhere. We got our Montana tag results earlier this month and we got one. Noticed a new charge on the credit card today and wouldn't you know it we drew in Colorado as well. I should preface this by saying we are archery hunters. The conundrum now is what one do we keep. Its my first time elk hunting but my buddy has gone 4 or 5 times now. He has been to Montana but never Colorado. He is intrigued by Colorado by the geography of the place and its beauty. I personally think Montana is the better choice by elk numbers, the fact he has been to and been into elk in Montana and lastly the terrain may be very eye appealing, reading some info on here it sure sounds like a meat grinder for those not used to it. I understand Colorado would be a longer hunt. we are planning 10 days including drive time for Montana. Im guessing we would need longer for Colorado to factor in we are more back pack hunting instead of "day" hunting in Montana. My issue around that is im leaving just before or just after my 10 year anniversary, my youngest sons first day of school and my oldests hockey try outs. I dont want to stress the old lady too much more lol...
I suppose thats a long ass way of asking if you were to choose between the two, what would be your choice?
