I will throw this out. If it is the same as last year I missed my first chance at an alt tag because the email did not have the Montana Fish, Wildlife address on it. It came from the secretary handling the alt tags. I over looked it until I called and was ask if I had received an email from this females name. ( can't remember her name now ) So I looked and sure enough I had. So if you get a strange email that you don't recognize look at the email address and see it it came from the MFWP. Then again they could have changed it from last year.

I was just told by a rep at Montana FWP that they had only 200 elk combos returned last year. That seems awfully low. Does anybody know if this is about right? I'm thinking I may need to check back with somebody else there on that...

a new thing popped up on my FWP account today

To register for Alternate and Surplus Lists, simply click or tap to select the lists you want, then click "Register for Selected Lists" and confirm your information. For more information and updates, see the Alternate and Surplus Information page.

It has a list of what appears to be surplus licenses as the are all B tags for deer etc.

Do we have to register for the B tags in order to possibly get contacted about the combo tag etc. in the area we want to hunt? I am confused?

This is a list of surplus (leftover) tags for antlerless elk and deer. You check the ones you want and wait. FWP is going to randomize the list of people after 8/7 and will start offering tags. But, YES you do have to sign up.

I’m raising my own odds but, yes, just so you understand, you do NOT need your Combo license to be able to purchase the surplus B tags, however they are for antlerless animals. Plus on the deer you can purchase 2 tags if you’re drawn and can also purchase an OTC whitetail regional antlerless tag.

Is there a way to track what number the alternate list is on as tags are returned?

The order changed. My number went the wrong way big time. Any idea from MT as to what happened?
