Lots of advice and praise for the Remington Model 7. I too am a fan and live only 15 minutes from the factory thats in Ilion, NY. This is Remington's 200th Anniversary! Likely the longest lived manufacturing plant in American History.
Anyhow, while I own several Model 7's, in both standard and Short Action magnum calibers, your issue is the Mcmillan stock IMHO. My 243 holds 4 rounds plus one in the chamber both with the original wood stock or the Custom Kevlar Remington model stock. My 7mm SAUM only holds 2 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. But, the stock is NOT an original. Its a fiberglass stock that was glass bedded that I bought years ago on ebay. The original stock (sold it on ebay), may have held 3 + 1, but I don't remember. I can crunch the 3rd round into the magazine, but then after cycling the bolt, no way will it chamber.
If you have issues with 4 rounds in the magazine, then load 3, the drop #4 into the chamber, hold down the top round in the magazine and close the bolt. Thats always how I load my M7's in 308, 7-08 & 243 and my 7mm SAUM with 2 in the magazine & 1 in the chamber.
