Milled Tikka action

If you wanted to do this with Tallys you could have him jog the cutout back to keep the screw holes. Still would remove most of the material to shave weight.

I’ve been thinking about something along those lines. Gonna have to do some pondering and measuring.

What barrel are you putting on it @Sadler? Expect any weight savings over the stock barrel?

For the larger group: I’m thinking about using this idea for a Tikka build. Is the only difference between the Superlite and Lite the fluted barrel? Is a barrel upgrade a worthwhile expense on a Tikka? I suspect the Lite stock barrel could be fluted for weight savings if I found a Lite significantly cheaper than a Superlite?

No I’m not expecting any. I just wanted a shorter carbon barrel. It’s an 18” carbon six chambered in 6.5 PRC.

I have a stock tikka 7mm barrel in my garage somewhere. I’ll try to find it and compare the weights for ya.

That's pretty awesome, you basically have an anTi for less money and wait time.
If I'm looking at this right Karl milled a new front recoil pin hole?
How much do your rings weigh?

Yeah that’s what I was going for. I have one of them in order but I won’t have it for a while.
Yes, he milled out a new one to fit the lug in the sportsmatch rings. These ones are the highs and they weigh 4.5 oz. The mediums weigh 3.5 ounces. Once my NXS 2.5-10 shows up, I’ll be using those.

Yes, the only difference is the fluted barrel.

Depends which Lite you're looking at. Some Lites are blued and some are stainless. All Superlites are stainless.

So upgrading from a Lite to a Superlite might get you just a fluted barrel or it might get you a stainless barreled action and fluting. If that makes sense...

I’m looking primarily at the Lite SS compared to the Superlite. If I’d go with a Lite, I’d flute the barrel. Probably a no go with a blued barrel unless I want to re-finish.

Superlites are on sale right now for less than the light stainless at sportsmans warehouse

They were on sale, I could be wrong but I believe the sale is already over. I snagged one in 300 WSM Wednesday and it was $80 off reg price.

It's unlikely, I just did the whole CF vs SS back and forth with a manufacturer. For the same barrel length in a rather thick SS barrel, the weight savings for carbon was .4oz. For a really thin barrel like a Lite or SL, it's likely going carbon increases the weight.

Here’s an update. I got my barrel today so I did a mock up to see how it looks and what the total weight will be. I did weigh the barrel separately first and was shocked the 18” bull barrel was only 38oz. I’m a big fan of how it looks too. It’ll look even better once it’s cerekoted. Total weight with loaded mag and suppressed is 9lbs 5oz. I’ll take it!

Took it to the range today to test out my new chrono and see what kind of speeds I’ll be getting. I’m shooting @Unknown Munitions mayhem ammo loaded with 156 gr Bergers and am getting an average of 2724FPS and was able to shoot .75 moa. I’m pretty dang happy about how this project turned out. Looking forward to putting it to work this year. 5D5AEFB0-7E0E-4970-B13E-8A1F340204BE.jpeg02C364F0-DF5E-4F1C-8FE2-687ED0901C18.jpegBE89211A-3527-4707-9CD1-202B163FF4D5.jpeg

Are you going to have the inside of the receiver and bolt cerakoted as well?

I just finished my action, and I think I have wrecked it. My thinking was that as long as I didn’t do anything in-front of the bolt face I would be ok. But my gunsmith was not sure if the .025 deep radius flutes behind the bolt face would cause a weak point in the receiver and be dangerous. I have done the math on bolt thrust and all tikkas use the same action, a 300win mag has 14,226 psi of bolt thrust and the 280AI I am building has 10,894psi of bolt thrust. Besides testing with over pressure loads does anyone know of any ways to determine if this action is usable or scrap steel? 71F7AC76-F877-4732-840C-41DB83E55494.jpeg71F7AC76-F877-4732-840C-41DB83E55494.jpeg
