Because It looks cool and saving a little weight is a bonus. Why do that? Weight? It’s going to effect rigidity which is most of the reason that’s a very consistently accurate action.
I have an anti on order but the lead time is about ten months so I won’t even have it until January 2022. So in the meantime, I’m going to see how light I can make this action.I've wanted the same work done. I've seen it referred to as a "Sheep Port". After adding all the work that I wanted to a tikka action, I'm just going with a Defiance.
Karl has a really nice place and shop but it's a bit of an adventure to find it. His place is quite a ways off of Hwy 95 up the Upper Pack River Rd. I dropped a couple actions off with him in January three years ago and that day it was a 4x4 only trip to his place. This time of year I'm sure it's much better but I've found it's a hell of a lot easier to just call him on the phone to give him a heads up on what I'm sending and what I want then send it in the mail. I'm only a couple hours from him and I still mail it.Just got off the phone with him. Sounds like he’s willing to give it a shot I just need to swing by and drop off my action.

I’ll post them up for ya. The guy in NZ emailed me back and said it shaves off 1.5 ounces. Not much but it’s something. Also, unless something has changed, Karl has crazy fast turn around times. The last bolts he fluted for me I mailed on a Monday and had them back the following week. Not sure what his work load is like now but he doesn't mess around and gets shit done very quick and back to you fast. I'm interested in seeing how yours turns out so post pics when it's done. I have a feeling these pics are going to cost me money. lol
When you get to the ridge top at 6500 feet in the Brooks range searching for little white dots with sweeping horns, you'll swing off your pack, take a deep swig of lemon berry flavored water and thank the good lord in heaven that you were able to pack 1.5 ounces less up the mountain.........even though you packed two of everything despite being told that you really don't need that widget and one of anything is enough.I think the fluted bolt looks cool but really don’t care about cutting the top out of the action. Looks like fixing something that ain’t broke IMO.

Ya got me there!! =)Isnt that half of what this site is about? Finding ways to fix stuff that isnt broke?
Following up on this. Works been keeping me away but I just got off the phone with Karl and he was able to mill 4oz out of the bolt and action. Once I get it back from him I’ll post pictures of it and how it looks.
What was the cost?
Did you have a chance to weigh the action before Karl worked on it?? Been wondering what a Tikka action with bolt weighs sans barrel?? Bet it will be nice once Karl is doneFollowing up on this.
