Milled Tikka action

Got the action back already. Here’s how it turned out. The first picture on the scale is how much it weighed when I got it back from Karl, the last picture shows the weight of it with an upgraded bolt handle and shroud. That shaved another 1.5 ounces making it come in at just over 22oz total.

I'm not that familiar with Tikka's so I can't really tell what was all done but besides the bolt being fluted and those milled slots on both sides of the receiver what else did Karl mill on that action or was that all he did?

The bolt handle was a swap you did correct?

Yeah he fluted the bolt and milled those slots in addition to milling off the top bridge. Here’s a side by side of it next to a normal tikka action. Yes, the bolt handle was swapped to a mtn gear original

Looks great! Knowing how the users of this site operate I'd say Karl is going to get some phone calls in the near future.

How does the front ring work with on one hike to mount? Or are you going to do a rail?
Curious to see how you mount the scope

Think if going with the Sportsmatch rings it should still work fine??

The sportsmatch rings work just fine. They overhang a little up front but they did that before he milled it down and I just need to move the rear ring back a little to make it flush with the ejection port4053B2E9-8D34-4F1E-99F2-F5EBD7A512FF.jpeg

I suppose this all makes sense if you already had a Tikka action laying around, but with all the wonderful custom actions we have available these days, why not just buy one of those up front and save yourself the headache? Plus you’d eliminate that silly floating recoil lug too.

This is a really cool project. Not much different than all the old remington 700 projects that everyone used to be so hot about. It'd be interesting to see if it could be made to work with adl blind mag box. As far as no advantage over the many custom actions... I'm not so sure about that. The tikka has a much lower bolt throw than some of the custom actions I've seen on here recently where guys are barely clearing thE ocular bell on lower mounted scopes. Also a $1000 tikka plus $225 of machine work is still cheaper than most custom actions alone.

Not to mention it’s not very difficult at all to pick up a tikka for $700 or less. Most custom actions that have built in bases are very high, the tikka on the other hand is very low and at least to me that counts as another advantage for the tikka. I have yet to talk with a gunsmith that deals with tikkas that feels there is any custom action built to higher tolerance then them (part of why pre fits are available from every manufacturer that does that)

My last donor, pre rona was a blued 6.5x55 from sportsmans warehouse. 549.97 and 5% discount.
Sold the stock, barrel, bottom metal and magazine on here for $150. After taxes and fees probably a $400 donor.

Same here. My last donor was a blued .308 Compact I got new for $579. Gave the shorty stock to a friend who has two young kids.

Then I sent it to Karl for some work. Glad I didn’t see this first or I’d be out another $225. Actually, really wish I’d seen this first. I think it looks cool as hell.

That thing looks awesome! I think I'd want the front rail to extend a little further back which wouldn't look as clean but would make me feel better about sportsmatch rings having full rail engagement.

Might have to copy this some day..
