This is the first year I’ve used a Garmin on my dog, For those using GPS collars for your dog, how many miles per day are you and your dog covering? What’s the species and terrain?

So far this year I’ve been averaging 6 miles per day while the dog is averaging 15. This is for chukar hunting in steep, rough terrain and includes 1,500 to 2,500 vertical climbed each day. Pup is 10 months old, weather has been warm so I’ve been limiting time on the hills until she builds more stamina, gets a little older and the weather cools down. I suspect by the end of the season I’ll be up to 10 miles and she’ll be covering in excess of 20. I’m also gonna head to some of the more gentle, rolling bird country I know that’s further away.

No dog, but I covered 11 miles for 2 blue grouse, flushed several more with no shot though.

Tough for sure, small pockets of birds in vast country!

My dog locked down one covey of about 20 chukars yesterday and they came up just out of shooting range. I put on five miles in that steep country so the pup had much more than that for sure..I dont track him with GPS, he just runs a stimulate/tone collar.

At my age the more gentle rolling chukar country is much more appealing for me. The dog could care less!

Dog goes about 2 to 3X what we go....which is as much as 25 miles for the dog, but more typically 12-15 miles. Our ave day is 6 miles and the most was about 13 miles a few years ago. Was in Hun country....not as steep and rocky as straight chukar mountains but still had a lot of hilly terrain with a lot of elevation change. I am a few years older now, haha!
