This is the first year I’ve used a Garmin on my dog, For those using GPS collars for your dog, how many miles per day are you and your dog covering? What’s the species and terrain?

So far this year I’ve been averaging 6 miles per day while the dog is averaging 15. This is for chukar hunting in steep, rough terrain and includes 1,500 to 2,500 vertical climbed each day. Pup is 10 months old, weather has been warm so I’ve been limiting time on the hills until she builds more stamina, gets a little older and the weather cools down. I suspect by the end of the season I’ll be up to 10 miles and she’ll be covering in excess of 20. I’m also gonna head to some of the more gentle, rolling bird country I know that’s further away.

My dog locked down one covey of about 20 chukars yesterday and they came up just out of shooting range. I put on five miles in that steep country so the pup had much more than that for sure..I dont track him with GPS, he just runs a stimulate/tone collar.

At my age the more gentle rolling chukar country is much more appealing for me. The dog could care less!

Dog goes about 2 to 3X what we go....which is as much as 25 miles for the dog, but more typically 12-15 miles. Our ave day is 6 miles and the most was about 13 miles a few years ago. Was in Hun country....not as steep and rocky as straight chukar mountains but still had a lot of hilly terrain with a lot of elevation change. I am a few years older now, haha!

My dogs typically at least double my miles when chukar hunting. I have two griffs and some buddies with GSP’s say their dogs usually do triple.

I track my dog miles as well as my own, but I do not do a good job of correlating those recorded averages to length of hunt, terrain, etc. I do notice then when hunting thick cover the ratio of dog miles :my miles shrinks. I have had the dogs do 4.5 : 1 and cover over 40 miles in a day when hunting open cover for huns. When hunting pheasants in cattails, it might be 2 : 1. The ratio also changes throughout the day. The first hour they are on the ground the ratio is much higher. The last hour it is lower. During a week long trip, the ratio also shrinks towards the end of the trip. The overall average the past couple seasons for all cover types and all situations is that the dogs cover 2.8-3.0 miles for every mile I cover.

Yesterday, I cut the hunt short due to deer hunters arriving at my spot, but the numbers were Dog 1: 25.8 miles, Dog 2: 22.9 miles, me : 8.2 miles. This was in fairly flat ground that was a mix of tall sage brush and reeds. This is for two German Shorthairs who are still in their prime (4 years old).

My dog almost always does right around 3X what I do. On a typical day quail hunting it's usually somewhere around 8 mi for me and 24-27 mi for the dog. I try not to go over that if I'm planning to hunt several days in a row.
