Miles City, MT

Headed to Miles City in a few weeks and need to book a hotel room for a few nights. Any places to avoid? Best spots to eat and see while I’m in town?

Appreciate any advice!

Nice town. Stop their often traveling through to fuel up. Havnt spent a night their but would like to sometime. Not much help but it's a nice small town.

Rooms in Miles City are expensive for what you get. The "Travel Lodge" is an old Motel 6. I'd avoid. Super 8 is tired but if you need just a sleeping room, it works. The rest vary. I live 2 hours away and we only stay if we are hunting in that area.

I stayed at the Miles City Hotel & Suites right off the interstate last year while on the way to South Dakota. It was a clean Hotel with very good service, and better than average breakfast food.

Several restaurants in walking distance, as well as a few gas stations nearby. There is also sister Hotel across the street that takes dogs called the Miles City Hotel (no Suites).

I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

I’ll second this. I’ve stayed at another that I can’t remember but this one was good.
One thing that did weird me out was every hotel had a “soup” bar and soup hrs…. That was a first. This was pre Covid though so times might of changed.

I have always enjoyed the Range Riders Museum when I have time to kill in Miles City.

I had to have some tire work done there a few years ago and stayed at the Super 8 just south of the interstate, It was descent. If you need any tire work, the Point S Rolling Rubber is top notch, great people and they went way out of their way to help me. There is a bar/eatery just a block north and a bit west of the tire place that was really good, don't remember the name. It is a barbecue place.

Great little town. We have family south of the river along the Tongue and try to go out there a few times a year. You should check out the Montana Bar if you get a chance. Good food and lots of history from the days of the open range. There’s still a bullet hole in one of the walls when things got a little western in there one night.

I'll second the Range Riders Museum and I'll put a plug in for the Tongue River Winery. Red Rock sports is pretty good for browsing guns and such. I haven't needed to stay there in quite some time but stayed at the Econolodge previously.

Black iron is good. Usually stop there for lunch on my way through. I learned to keep my expectations sorta low when it comes to food and lodging when anywhere east of Billings.

I've never spent a night in a hotel near Miles City. Do consider visiting Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. It's about 2 hrs from Miles City, but depending on how you drive, it might not be much out of the way.

The FWP Miles City office is nearby and worth a 10 minute visit.

You can park behind McDonalds and hike to the top of the hill with the water tower - it's a great view overlooking the city.

If you have the time, best just to park on one of the few main streets and walk up and down to look at what you can find. It's a real small place so it shouldn't take long.

I've stayed a day or two at Super 8 or Travel Lodge the past few years - never had a problem at either but preferred the Super 8 and always parked my truck right near my room window. Maybe prices just went up, but I suspect the many workers staying in town to work on the wind farm to the north may have increased demand and decreased supply.

Breakfast at the 600 Cafe for a little local taste—good food, reasonable prices and plenty of cowboy hats

Main Street Grind for lunch; if they still have it try the Pittsburger

If you stop at FWP headquarters, check out the "Wall of Shame" (it's where the Block Mgt folks reside during hunting season). Some interesting cases and seized mounts from over the years.
