In CA, there is a big game draw. As a bow hunter it’s fairly wide open with what we call the ARCHERY ONLY tag. I put in for a point as my first choice, And then the AO tag as the second choice. The AO tag lets you hunt a lot of public land. The tag is a gimme. Down south there is plenty of wilderness area that hold deer. You will work your butt off for a smaller animal, but the reward quotient is high.

If I have more time, I will take my accumulated points and put in fir a quality hunt (bow or rifle) and still get the AO tag as the second choice. I’d=f I draw my first choice grit. If not, I get the point and trudge the subpar areas for an okay deer. You end to look at Regis to see which area are open to the AO tag. There are a lot of them.

Turkey! No prob. Lots of turkey. You may have to beg fir permission. But they are not beloved. Pigs. Public land. More up near me in northern ca.

And yes AZ is very close for you.

Good luck e everything.

Could you PM me about pig hunting, I have a CA pig tag that has yet to be punched with my bow! I can't seem to find those suckers on public land.

it's no secret. i hunt public land hogs at Lake Sonoma. it is an area run by the Feds. the Army Corp of Engineers. so the rules are different. like NO guns, but archery and crossbows are allowed. the season starts Thanksgiving weekend, and goes until the 3rd weekend of March. it is by far one of the toughest hunts in CA. getting next to a nomadic animal, as smart (smarter?) than your average pet dog is no easy feat.

i am not succesful so far. i have two hogs with my arrows holes, but they lived. my buddy recovered an arrow of mine the week after i put a hole in the beast. it was humping a sow! with my arrow in his shield. it is a very good and fun hunt. the scenery is breathtaking. lots of hog signs..LOTS of it. but like i said, it is a tough tough hunt. i rate a LS hog up there with a bull elk as far as my "wish list"

i am so sorry so many folks hate it here in CA. it would be awful to live where you hate..i would move.
me, i am blessed with the ability to make the best of any situation.

well, except FRESNO. no thanks :).

i live in Sonoma Wine country. i just found out my auntie is about to donate 100 acres of some land she owns here..she said it is pure wilderness. i personally want to try to buy it from her. hehe.. for the hogs and turkey only.

Unless they are paying you a large amount of money I would highly recommend against making that move!

I won't sell I live in a very nice small town north of LA. If you believe that's possible. Cost of living is relevant and I do have my acres off grid outside Yosemite when I need to get away. Plenty to do here and many areas to hunt and fish.

IMO the job or family situation would have to be an absolute must to warrant a move here to California. That's for multiple reasons including hunting. You can hunt, but you probably won't have much fun compared to all the other Western States.

Anyone who says there is good hunting in SoCal is kidding you. Deer hunting sucks due to mountain lions. I wouldn’t move to SoCal with hopes of any good hunting in SoCal. Move here if you must, but you couldn’t pay me to move here from another state.

There are deer, you just have to put your time in. Way too many road hunters that hunt everyday to get a deer. My budddy and me pack into our spot and killed deer the first morning. We saw 4 legal bucks in 2 days of packing in and out. Just be willing to go where no one else goes

There is definitely hunting opportunities in SoCal, they just suck compared to colorado. I used to be big into waterfowling. I spent 6 years in Nodak and lived in Palm Desert for a couple years. My dog was used to 50 days a year hunting in the central flyway so I took him duck hunting near the salton sea mostly because I felt bad about him living the desert life. It was better than nothing but it was a sharp decline in hunting experience compared to what I was used to. I imagine bowhunting big game is much the same.

Pretty good hunting if you pay for it either by sweat, gas, boots, or $$$ on a PLM hunt in So Cal. All the game is concentrated in certain areas. Best coyote hunting, ever.

If you are getting a huge promotional salary you could hunt outside of California.

if Temecula is a promotion, I would hate to see where they demote folks.

As Mr Lusk knows well, home is where your family is. My home is in Ca. I can find hunting. There is a lot of fake news about CA. There is a lot to do here.

Some of the best dove shooting anywhere is near Temecula. Great bear and some very good deer and pig hunting up north. Great fishing....and carp shooting. The ocean fishing is a bit of a poke from Tememcula, but thats fantastic down south...and up near me in the SF Bay for salmon, stripers, Halibut [caught a 18# and a 32#ers last weekend] I could go on ...but all the naysayers hear is the idiot politicians and the negatives....why do you think so many people live in CA- because it sucks?

PLUS, A pastor will have connections most of us don't..

Now Temecula isn't exactly the garden spot of CA.....SoCal high desert. Kind of a low rent district....and a bit isolated.

Couple of hogs I shot in crummy Ca....and some pics of some on the hoof.....its no fun unless you sneak in real close to them...but be ready to use your bow as a self defense tool.

That’s the issue. My parents moved there a few years ago. You get all of the high taxes, regulations etc of Ca but you live in the desert an hour plus to all the things that make California appealing. I’m sure there’s a number that could get me to make that love, but it would be a really big number. Even then, I’d probably try to find a decent neighborhood near Oceanside and commute to Temecula opposite the traffic.
