Overseas Hunting Opportunities

Just trying to get some insight from all of you on here. I am stationed in Japan for a few years. I am trying to figure out what kind of hunting opportunities I should to take advantage of while I am on this side of the world. From my research it seems hunting is extremely restricted or completely prohibited in most of the neighboring countries (Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Korea) along with in Japan.

From what I have found it seems like New Zealand and Australia are my two most realistic options for hunting opportunities. Does anyone have experience out there or have suggestions for other locations?

I have heard of hunting opportunities in India, but have zero experience with it. It was the fellas at Field Ethos who have talked about it.

New Zealand would be great, I’d love to hunt the mountains there. Depending on how much you want to spend, you could go after an ibex or something in Asia. Blue sheep in Nepal would be cool too.

I am trying to find stuff that is doable on an enlisted salary haha. I have been reading about some public land hunts in New Zealand which sound great. I'm not against outfitters but it seems most of them are all $10K minimum and I can't quite pull that off.

I hadn't really thought about Nepal. I'm glad you brought that up. I have some friends in Nepal that I'll have to reach out to and see what kind of info that can give me.

+1 on New Zealand. Spent a month there (but didn’t hunt) and saw a few wild boar, many wild goats, quite a few red stag deer, and coveys of quail. I glassed a little for tahr but didn’t see any. Buddy from the states bagged one. Locals are friendly. Met a guy that worked at a sporting goods store that genuinely wanted to take me big game hunting. I just couldn’t fit it in. Good luck and let us know what DIY country you end up visiting.

Mongolia is probably your best bet. I personally have never been, but they have a pretty wide variety of game, and some incredible landscape.
May want to check that out.

You might have the right idea here. I might just have to make a scouting trip first to meet some people and look around. Then plan a second trip for a hunt.

I am interested in DIY NZ. I would like to do both islands. Planning on about a month in 2026 APRIL-May

Hunting is not prohibited in Japan. It is difficult to get into. I did a podcast on this with my buddy Rick who is an American who lives there and hunts.

I'm not aware of any hunting in India, also did a pdocast with my friend Prashant who has done the government tiger and leopard work.

Australia for camel would definitely be on top of my list. I can put you in touch with some guys.

NZ or any of Micronesia would be fun to do. Immerse yourself in those cultures.

If you want to get into the mountain stuff in central Asia, you would be closest there while in Japan.

Russia used to be an option...

What's your podcast called? I'd like to check it out.

I've made some Australian friends with the work we've been doing out here and they are pretty excited about taking me to do some fishing and small game but if you have a connection you are willing to share for camels, that would be greatly appreciated.

Russia is sadly one that will just have to wait for another time.
