Most all of my hunting has been early archery/muzzle loader seasons..and until this year the muzzy seasons have been unseasonably warmer.
This year hunting in either my prana's or EB guide pants with merino base layers I was great while moving...a little cooler while sitting/glassing.
This season I will be doing a late archery hunt and will be on some cooler weather rifle hunts helping buddies out.
I was looking for a pair of pants to round out my options in the gear closet.
Will most likely be around 4-5k ft elevation, possible snow conditions for rifle, likely snow line hunting for archery.
A few things I was looking at were the cabelas wooltimate wool or berber fleece pants, or the browning hells canyon prima loft half bib that are on sierra trading post; so looking in the under 130-150 range.
Should I just go with a much warmer base layer? or do I even needs new pants?

i have been happy with my sitka timberlines in similar conditions. Not sure if any of last years closeouts are still available.

I'm trying out the new Sitka Timberlines this year with the Kuiu Merino 145 zip off bottoms. I am planning on using them 1st Rifle - 3rd Rifle this year in Colorado.

Here is a review/write up on my experiences with the updated version of the Timberline Pant from Sitka Gear. I have never been a fan of heavily insulated pants due to the bulk and lack of maneuverability they generally have. I personally prefer wearing 1 pair of technical pants like the Timberline and changing between a light , mid, or heavy base layer bottom so I can adjust to the conditions on the fly. I also have a pair of those Cabela's Berber fleece pants and they are just ridiculously heavy and bulky in my opinion.

thats my issue, is wanting to avoid extreme bulk, and I have always liked just using my prana's with and without base layers to create some versatility.
i may snag a heavier base layer and even give the lined guide pants a try.
i know im being cheap but dont want to shell out 230 for a pair of pants that i will wear just a few times a year.

While I don't hunt at altitude (Whitetail), I do switch between actively stalking to sitting still in a blind or stand. I completely agree with Black Ovis, heavy bulky pants while moving can be annoying. I pack a pair of compressible puffy pants. They take up little room and fit over my hunting pants when I get cold, it's easier then removing a base layer (unless you pull your long johns over your trousers). Seems like it would work while glassing. Then after the shot, pack them away and you won't overheat while tracking or packing out.

For what's worth.
