I have some merino 145 weight shirts and pants that just stink real bad when wet, sweat or just water. How the heck to I get rid of this? I have washed it in an HE washer with woolite, hunters wash, baking soda. Even tried hand washing in RO water. Nothing helps. Help before I set fire to this really expensive gear! Lol

Not gonna list the product name cause I don't want it to turn into bashing them.

My brand new first lite set had this issue during the first wash also. Once I wore them a few times and washed again it went away.

My First Lite solid color stuff never stunk, but the camo does. And the other brand has always stunk as well. Not sure what the difference is......but this year I could barely stand it the one day I wore it, and it's been washed several times.

All my merino has a very mild freshly washed wet dog smell and it has faded in all ofthem with washing. Terramar , Icebreaker , and First Lite. If it's a sour smell or overwhelming I'd send it back.

But why? This stuff is supposed to be great, not perfect of course, for odor control. I have called both manufactures I have and they both said it will fade in time. Whatever... For the money It should be awesome from the get go not smell like the sheep they got the wool from! I will try some of the ideas listed and hope for the best. Thanks fellas

Ill take merino smelling like a sheep a little for a bit vs synthetic permanently smelling like ball sack. Just sayin

This ^

Merino wool has inhibitors that block the human scent and wicks it away better then any other fabric. That smell your smelling is a good thing. merino by nature has a natural but unusual smell to it. When it gets wet its even a bit worse. But after living in a shirt for 5 days at least it doesnt smell like body order. Which is what your after.
Id check out this link if you want to learn more and educate yourself a bit. http://us.icebreaker.com/en/why-icebreaker-merino/how-does-icebreaker-merino-perform.html

I was like you when I first started wearing it. "What the hell is that smell" Now Im kind of used to it. And when your sweating your tail off moving up a mountain after your game your going notice the difference.
Also something I learn with Merino. Most of it is a tight athletic fit. This is how it should be. You want the shirt to always be next to your skin because that is how it wicks the moisture from your body out. Nothing worse then being coated in sweat and staying that way. Yeah it can be uncomfortable at first but youll see the benefits after you wear it a while.

My humble 2 cents

I've ran the core4 merino for several years and I only get the smell right out of the washer. On the mountain or working out, I don't notice it.

I called FL today and the first guy said he'd never heard of that, he asked a coworker and said it'd go away after a couple wash cycles, I told him I washed them in dead down wind prob 12 times he said thats what they use and I dont know what to tell you

Lmao. Don't get me too wrong guys it's still way better than any synthetic crap I have ever used. Comfortable , warm even when wet, dries fast, just the smell but if y'all say it goes away then I will wear and wait it out! Thanks for the intel and the humor guys!
